ok i have a 69 and the guy that had it before me put a built 460 in it and when i eccelerate the oil pressure drops to 20 but when its werming up its at 60 and when its been running for a min it drops down to 45. is it because the oil is going to the back of the pan away from the pickup?
60 and 45 are really high for the average 460. So let Me get this strength Your rolling along and have 45psi You open the throttle and Your oil pressure drops to 20psi?
if your cruzzing at a steady rpm and ya step on the gas and oil psi drops a few lbs the thrust bearing in the motor is got some slop in it. what this does is it lets the crank move forword and back letin a lil oil get past it. nothin realy to worry about for a while theyll run a long time before things get realy bad
no sir it only does it when im stopped and i launch the truck and its not stock it has a high volume oil pump thats why its 40-45 when its wermed up, nice truck btw turbo 6.9
my 460 with a hi vol pump run at 75-80 psi cold 60 hot at hiway speed and 45 at idle with 10w40 oil,i still bet your cranks movin back and forth. crawl under the front of the truck a see if you can move the balencer pulley in and out a bit, itll take a lil effert to do it but should be able to do it by hand if its getin loose
HV pump and a stock pan? There ya go, the typical symptoms that most people bring up: A HV pump will suck a stock pan dry. Maybe not completely, but it's showing you there is an issue.
Try putting another qt of oil in it? Do you have you have 5pt pan? Put another 1/2 qt in and see if it helps.
I would check to see if it is the oil sliding away from the pump by doing this:
Brake stand it in your driveway. Bring the rpm's up as high as you can without the tires moving (might be hard with that 460!) and see if the oil pressure drops.
I am thinking that you are simply running low on oil in the pan when the volume demand is high, and the acceleration is just pushing the oil back. BTW, i would get this addressed very soon because frothy oil doesn't lubricate as well as normal oil!
ok i got on the brakes kinda hard tonight and it did the same thing it dropped to around 20 and then i did the brake stand thing and the oil psi just went up so that must mean i need to get another pan right? and this is a new motor its built right.
The only problem is you can't put a DEEP pan on this since we have that elusize crossmember. Side kickouts are out also. I made my own large pan for mine years ago, just added to the back of pan.
Your fix might be just pulling the pan and checking clearance between pickup and pan bottom. If it's an aftermarket piece, they are usually wayyyy off. I had to cut mine and drop it down to get it within 3/8" of bottom.
ive never had a problem like that, just put the stock pick up on the hv pump and stock pan. but ive never run a heavy oil either like 20-50 always stuck to 10-30 or 10-40
well it alos does it when i take a turn kinda hard o and the guy the the motor mounts put the motor kinda high so i might br able to get this melidon pan its on jegs for $230 but i think i will pull the pan first check the pickup and if i need the pan then i will get it. im also going to look and make sure that he really did put a HV oil pump on it.
