Even with a one-piece shaft, you're still going to have to incorporate SOME kind of "spline", unless you convert to ball-and-trunion type U-joints.

With nearly 1/2 million members someone here must have tried this. But they are hidden in the woodworks somewhere I guess.

I see that youve replaced u joints, and carrier bearing, but I have not heard anything about balancing the driveshafts. My truck has a single shaft, as its a ecsb. But mine had a "vibration dampner" at the differential end. It ate up u-joints, so a simple smack with a hammer, and a trip to the local driveshaft shop, to get it balanced, and Ive been trouble free since. I had vibrations mostly around 68-74. Above that it suspiciously went away. But I got used to feeling for it in the 4wd shifter. I would suggest taking your driveshaft to get balanced. You can take an angle finder, and do the measurements on the driveshaft and differential, and make sure they are lined up, or a couple of degrees down at the differential (as they turn up on acceleration). Also, and this may seem irrelivant, but it has everything to do with it. Are you still on oem rear springs and bushings? If they are wore, you may notice the differential turns more then it should aswell. I would start by getting your driveshaft balanced. What speeds are you haveing trouble with anyways?

From 30 to 40, then from 50 to 60. I was just doing a yahoo search for a driveshaft service place in or near Rock Hill, SC just now and there does not seem to be one. Anyone in the Charlotte, NC area know of one? I have suspected out of balance as a problem for a while but have not been able to find a shop. In Buffalo I know everyone and there are plenty there so I am having a hard time believing there are none in this area.

Spoke to the driveshaft shop today. Any shaft over 60"'s is asking for trouble. I did make an appointment for after the first of the month to have it balanced. They said the spline is a problem for many of us, so hopefully that is all I have wrong. Thanks for all of the replies.

the guy is telling the truth

and as far as the splines go,if not greased we have already experienced the pop when taking off,in the next segment of wear the spline will start to whip giving a viberation then worse as wear progresses

not real expensive if there is room to cut old spline off,the just have to buy male and female splines, then weld together and balance
should do new center bearing and u-joint

haven't had it done lately, but a whole shaft on a class 8 truck 10 years ago was less than $200,I use to have at least one a month done

I may be able to manage that. Just did the U-joint's the day after Christmas so they should be salvageable, the center support about 18 months ago. I will take the driveshafts shop advice on that one.

Has to be removed, why? Because of heat if welding has to be performed?
