Short Excursion in the snow video
I did a little off-roading in the snowy mountains
of Southern California Friday.

I enjoyed breaking trail for several miles, then
turned back and did some rainy lower-elevation.
As always the Ex performed very well, and I had
a good time, back home in the early afternoon.
One of the neat things about living by the coast
in orange county...

just remember - the Excursion is one heavy monster - difficult to get unstuck - and be ASSURED you can get these tanks VERY stuck.
The problem is a mis-conception, of those of you who are not mechanically inclined, that "4 x 4" means FOUR wheel drive. It does not.
Unless you have removed the stock front and rear differentials, and installed "lockers" (or are one of the VERY few who have "limited slip" differentials on both FRONT and REAR differentials) "4 x 4" means TWO wheel drive.
That's right, once you get into the slippery stuff, each of your axles MUST convert to ONE wheel drive. That is the price of living in this particular universe, with the laws of physics and mathmatics. Our vehicles have DIFFERENTIALS. Guess why they are called that !
You have a differential, so that when you go around a corner on dry pavement, you dont break an axle or tear up your tires from the fact that the inside wheel goes MUCH slower than the outside wheel.
One trick you can use to some LIMITED degree of sucess, is that when you get what you THOUGHT was a FOUR wheel drive vehicle stuck in slippery stuff, gently apply the brake. That will impose a roughly EQUAL resistance to all the wheels turning, and each of your differentials will try and drive both wheels.

For instance, I had a contact fall out of my eye while i was on the highway, so I pulled off the road (1 rear wheel on the shoulder 1 on the grass/mud/dirt. After i fixed my contact, I gave it some gas to accellerate back into traffic, and the wheel in the dirt spun significantly more than it seems a limited slip should have allowed it to, IMHO of couse
