semi autos are very reliable, i ave yet to ever have one malfunction. in 9 years dealing with them in the military i never witnessed or heard of one having a non-neglect related malfunction. i know they do but point is it is a rare thing.
I just had to comment... I have a Glock 10mm (among many other handguns) that I purchased in 1991... I've shot over 57,000 rounds through it and have had only ONE malfunction. It was my fault because of not seating the magazine in all the way after a hasty reload. The original magazines "swelled" when loaded and had to be pulled out (wouldnt drop free like the newer ones)... it wasnt hard to think it was seated all the way. Tap-rack-bang and I was back up and running in under one second.
Modern semi-automatics are very reliable and I would stake my life on one just as easily as I would a revolver.
Glock 26 (9mm) or 27(.40) both small frame easy to carry and glock is one of the safest guns out there with no external safety and very reliable easy to clean.
one other note...if you have never carried a gun a small, light gun will be better for you. I carry a Glock 23 and it is a mid frame and it will become irritating after some time on my side.
