302 Block and Head identification

Where can I find info on the 302 block and heads that I am assembling? They did not start out together, and I just want to find out some history.

the heads just say 302 on one side, and there is the numbers 3A12 on one head and 3A13 on the other. The block is at the shop, and I don't have that number right now.

I have searched these numbers and nothing came up.

On the bottom of the head will be a casting number. Look for something like E7TE or that type of number/letter combo.

3A12 and 3A13 indicate that the heads were cast on January 12th and 13th of the third year of some decade. Since the 302 was produced from 1968 to 2002(?) this means that they were cast in 1973, 83 or 93. The casting (engineering?) numbers should tell you the decade.

The block casting (engineering) numbers are above the starter. Ditto on it's date code. This only tells you when it was cast and what block it is, as for the vehicle it was originally installed in, there's no way to determine that.

FYI.. Head casting numbers on most later versions are on the head gasket side near the intake ports.

Well those heads must have been cast in 1973. Did you find a block casting number?

D2OE heads would have been used in any 302 application, not just mid size and trucks.
