Exhaust: Eliminating Muffler

I'm thinking bout cutting my muffler off and just putting a straight pipe in its place. Can anyone give me the downside to this or is it all up. Will my fuel mileage go down?? I heard one the other day when it went by just a whistling away and it appeared to be stock exhaust just like mine. Was told thats what happens when the mufflers cut off. Diablo turned to 60 is only mod.. And.... should I look to cut off the catalytic or will that just cause check engine light issues. Early 99 is what I got.

no issues. cut off resonator box as these never had cats if i recall correctly. only downside is a little more noise and upside is better fuel mileage and lower egt's. go for it!

if you would like it alittle louder by all means DO IT! they sound alot better that way. i seen alittle better mpg. i also went with a 4" from the turbo back with no muffler. sounds to go to be true. but if your on a budget (i'm not saying you are or not) thats the best way to do it.

I would do it. The downside is it is harder than it should be. The stupid thing is not a flow through so you have to get a 3.5" pipe bent for the angle or ???

actually if you unbolt the front section from the downpipe after you cut the muffler out, you can "spin" that section and position it so that a straight pipe will connect the two.

Darn, I would have done mine in the interim then...I still have the pipe taking up space in the garage.

Thank You all for the advise... Looking to do it real soon. On a real tight budget with a new kid comin on friday. Got lookin at the exhaust and the 3 different sizes just confused the heck outta me. Any muffler shop witha bit of sense should know how to do this I figure at a rather cheap expense(I HOPE)

Yepper, the guy by me was going to charge like fifty bucks installed. Too bad you cant afford the ship the pipe down there or you could have mine and diy. You would also need clamps and stuff so you are better off having it installed.

I would have to say that the 4" SS turbo back is my favorite mod. The comments I get on what a "cool" sounding truck I have make it more than worth it. Not to mention the better mpg, and lower egt's.

MSRP SS, put the muffler that came with it on my motor home, now the Cat sounds as cool as the 7.3.

Kupaa, my truck was in Michigan since new. I did the muffler delete this summer and the only problem I had was the bolt from the clamp broke off rather than turning loose. The exhaust slipped apart with little effort. I really glad I took the time for the delete.
