Add oil cooler?

What oil temps are you getting with your 460? And who has added an oil cooler, what brand and how does it work? I know cooling the oil extends oil life and helps cool the engine. What about combustion chamber temps? Does it help or hinder combustion?

I run a B&M stacked plate oil cooler with a 10" 900cfm puller fan mounted on it. Oil temps run 220-260 in the middle of the Mojave Desert. It's important that you use a stacked plate design, which acts as a bypass until oil viscosity thins from heat, or a dedicated thermostatic bypass with tubed type coolers. This allows the oil to come up to normal operating temperatures as fast as possible. It is true that hot oil does make horsepower. In many winter climates, a full-flow oil cooler would never allow your oil to reach normal operating temperatures and condensation will fill your oil pan.

Oil temperature has minimal effect on cylinder combustion. That's dictated by combustion chamber shape/size, top of piston design, spark plug placement, head material, ignition and cam timing. An engine that runs cooler is less prone to detonation, but combustion areas are cooled by engine coolant. Lower oil temps contribute little to overall engine temps; that's the job of a closed cooling system.

If you're concerned about high oil temperatures, use a synthetic oil. Flash points on synthetics are 100 degrees higher than dino oils and they're much less prone to molecular break-down at high operating temps. Within reason, you need hot oil. If you have an auto trans, that's where an oil cooler will produce significant, positive results.
