I am about to start getting my 73 f-100 ready to paint, and I was curious if anyone has ever used the paint that is base and clear together. You do not have to spray the base, then the clear you spray it all together from what I gathered. Also, I was thinking about painting the doors, hood, tailgate off the truck to make sure to get all of the panels. If I do this and use the same paint mixture will I have a problem with the truck looking different shades of color? Thanks
Not that I`m a painter, but I would of thought that the reason that you would use clear,is to give the base coat depth and if you mixed it that would defeat the purpose. Also if it is a light base colour the clear could give it a yellowing tinge.I thinking I`m trying to say,I wouldn`t do it....cheers ..Robert
You must be talking about acrylic enamel. Its a single stage paint that doesnt require clear coat, has a pretty good shine and is a lot easier to work with. Its probably a good idea to take the hood off just because its hard to spray it right while you're hovering over it off a ladder or scaffolding. Otherwise I'd leave everything else on the truck. When I paint these trucks I'll take the hood off and spray it, then spray the top and back of the cab and around all the glass, doors included. Then spary the tailgate from the top down. Then I'll spray one whole side of the truck at one time from the top down and repeat for the other side. Theres a ton of different opinions on painting, looking around the internet and getting as much info as you an is a good idea

i used a single stage on my truck when i repainted it back in september. the paint is the same style that all auto makers use...it looks great and is easy to do..i would suggest getting HVLP paint gun and use a really good primer...and its all about the prep work...have you ever painted a truck before?
We paint all of out trucks from our tandem axle Peterbilt dump to our 1928 REO Speedwagon with acrylic enamel. We have painted about 20 trucks this way. Just be paitent and don't throw a bunch on to get it done faster. You WILL get runs in the paint!! The end result of our trucks look real good and there is no clear coat to flake off a couple years down the road. We painted a few things with base coat / clear coat and we weren't as happy with the outcome. However, the two painting methods are very different techniques and we have been used to the enamel for years.
With base coat / clear coat (BC/CC) the base color is painted over the primer and once it is dry the clear coat is sprayed on top of the BC. Usually a minimum of 2 coats of base and 2 coats of clear are used. A good BC/CC paint job will hold up better than a single stage acrylic paint job. On my 77 F150 restoration I am using an acrylic single stage paint on the interior, fire wall, and bottom of the cab, but I am going to use a BC/CC on the exterior of the truck.
There is a guy at work that is selling a turbine paint sprayer. Does anyone have any experience with one of these as compared to a paint gun with a compressor?
Thanks
