Keep it, or recycle it?

I must admit, I am right impressed with what I see of the 2009 F150 4X4. I don't need a heavy duty work truck such as the F250 or F350. All I do is drive a truck. I am in the mood to seriously shop around when the 2009 models hit the dealerships.

So, having said the above, if I buy a new 2009 F150 4X4, should I keep the Excursion or recycle it on to the next owner? I have too many vehicles sitting around now not being driven. It's a rhetorical question folks. Offered for nothing more than discussion more or less. What would you guys do if you were in the same situation? Do you think the value of a 40 year old Excursion will be that of an old Mopar such as the Charger R/T, Superbird or Cuda? They didn't make many of these things!

And before anybody asks.... yes, I am going to live to 100 years old.
Just so I can aggravate everybody on my Internet.

I'm assuming your Excursion is paid off if so I think you should keep it when you get an F-150, but even if it wasn't paid off and if I could afford both payments I'd still keep it. I agree with you, the 09 F-150's look pretty darn good.

Hope you enjoy buying a lot of gas. My bro-in-law drives one daily and the mileage SUCKS out loud. Horrible comes to mind. His is a crew cab 4x4 5.4L .... I'd stick with the Ex personally.

I'm pretty sure the new F-150s are going to get better mpg's than VaSheriff's V10 Gasser.

My .02 cents.

We hardly ever drive our X. Prior to the X we had an 03 Lincoln Navigator. When we traded it in on the X it only had 39,000 miles.

The point I'm going to make is that we have my company car that we use 90% of the time for running arrands going to church, etc. Between me the wife and 2 small kids we have 4 vehicles in our garage and primarily only drive one. Our X will be used for when family comes to town, vacations, hauling something, camping, etc. So it surves it's purpose as needed. Do we need it? Not really but it's nice to have it around as it's the best SUV man can buy, IMO.

If you can swing it... Keep it... Would I stretch myself financially? Not even maybe.

First of all (all IMHO of course) the Excursion will never be a collector's item. The reason some cars stand the test of time is because they were outstanding in their fields and each had some special distinguishing factor. I don't think the X (or any car I've seen recently from any of the big automakers) is distinctive enough to make a lasting impression. (but i think there is some argument on that point)

I say move on and get the f150 (But I'd stick around 'till 2010 or later and try out the diesel option (maybe better fuel efficiency, etc...) There will always be vehicle options down the line and more opportunities to buy them but don't spend pass up an opportunity to own a new car just for fear of letting go of the old one. You only live once, right? just my $.02

there is nothing better than that new car/truck smell, look/etc. How much do you like your Ex........I like mine so much that it is the first vehicle that I will keep more than three years, I'm at two now and don't plan on getting rid of it for a very very long time, maybe never. when the Ex is paid off (hopefully soon) the wife and I might get an additional car, something nice to drive on the weekend kind of thing.

I think for you it really depends on how much you like the Ex. keep it and get the F-150(they are nice looking)
Or if you can only swing one of the two, get the '09 F150.........no one will look down on you for wanting a new vehicle, at least not me

As far as Excursions becoming collector's items or not....that's hard to say. I can;t see how much of anything built today with ever have the collector status of the cars of yesterday. Same goes for "collectibles". Here's my thinking....and it's based on being involved in the old car hobby as well as a former Matchbox and slot car collector.

Items that are "collectible" today, were yesterday's used and discarded items. When they were new...they were simply new and ready for use. Today, too many items are manufactured as "collectibles". Look at diecast cars...Hot Wheels for example became collectibles because kids used them and abused them. Finding a perfect "Red Line" was difficult. Today...so many special editions are made that they are destined to never be big ticket items. Their height of value is when they are new.

I sold my former Superbirds when I thought the market had run it's course. Obviously that was before the Barrett Jackson BS, and had I held onto them I would have been able to pay off my house.

As an AACA member and NCPC Head Judge...I see what is big at the meets. By and large...it's cars. Back in "the day", the SUV, minivan, etc had yet to be a force in the marketplace. Still, at the meets you see some old Suburbans, Jeep wagons, etc.

Speculation. Okay...let's just say that today's younger people decide to get interested in today's vehicles...when they both are aging. I suppose there could be some that figure a short run, huge SUV from the past would hold some interest. (What's really sad to think is that next year the Chryser minivan celebrates 25 years of production...officially making them antiques.)

With the new CAFE laws coming, we may be seeing the last (at least for awhile) of the big SUVs, high horsepower cars. I plan on keeping my Excursion as long as is possible.
