intake manifold wars

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Dec-01 AT 00:45 AM (EST)]Is there any truth to the fact that the Edelbrock Performer manifold is not much better than the factory setup?? I have this sitting in garage waiting for me to open the plastic and put it on, but have heard lots of better things about the Weinad Stealh manifold. Is this manofold better than the Edlelbrock??

Thanks for the input

Tony

The Weiand Stealth manifold is indeed a better choice. The performer manifold is not really that much better than the stock manifold, aside from adding some induction heighth and slightly shorter runners.
The Stealth is based on a completely different flow design, with the lower RPM benifits of a dual-plane manifold and the upper-midrange benifits of a single plane. For the money, the Stealth is a much better choice for overall performance.

Does anyone have dyno numbers showing the Stealth to be superior to the Edlebrock Performer RPM or are we bench racing?

I've put both manifolds side-by-side and see little difference. Actually, how much difference can there actually be within required design parameters for a dual-plane manifold on a 385 series engine?

Im with george on that one...ive been waiting to see dyno results between factory, the stealth, the performer, and the rpm for a long time now. im not even going to buy a manifold till i know that its truly worth it. someone out there must have something?

Can't find the link right now, however in the past this has come up and I know I posted it then. The gentleman did a shootout with all different kinds of (single and dual plane) manifolds numbering around 8 or 10 or more, stock and the most popular aftermarkets. He couldn't post the actual numbers due to threatened legal action (who has the bucks to fight a large manufacture that declares legal war because their's doesn't measure up? He made the mistake of informing the manufactures of his intent before starting lookin' for free test "mules" I think), anyway, the article had the engine specs, carb and exhaust used and rated them for HP and torque. Sure, a lot made gobs of HP and a fair amount of torque, the single planes, but for overall performance the Stealth was rated the best. For pure torque, I think the Offy 360 deg dual-plane made the most but gave up a lot of HP. For pure HP it was one of the tunnel rams, don't recall which one due to the fact that it didn't really interest me other than a passing look. The Eldy's weren't rated that much better than the stock 4v intakes-they do weigh less though. There are differences in manifolds just like heads, minor differences can play a major role in both items.

Here is a link to a version of the page mentioned above. The 385 series web page was discontinued. I saved this page before it went out. I personally prefer the Stealth. The Performer RPM is a close second with the Performer a distant third among the three.

Bounty,
I have not towed anything with my truck yet. My dad did some towing with it the other day and he said it was great. I would think it would be not short of spectacular. My truck has enough low end grunt to smoke the tires taking off in second with a C6 and a 3.25 rearend. I wouldn't think I lost too awful much low-end by going with the Stealth!!

I use the Stealth on my 473ci mudracer and have no compaints. It lets the motor wind up to 6000rpm's where rev limiter is set and has real good bottom end torque.
No experiance with the edelbrock so I can't compare the two.

I remember sometime in the past year or so.... one of the major magazines did a comparison on intake manifolds.. It was Hot Rod or maybe Car Craft.. They did give the edge to the wiend also I believe. I plan to use the Edlebrock performer setup on my 460 I like the carbs... you don't have to keep messin' with it like a Holley.. I'll look around and see if I can find the article and post the issue date...

ya'll have a fine Christmas

My 460 runs much better with the Edelbrock performer #2166. I had and early model (70 I believe) non-EGR manifold and my truck now has more power up to 5500 rpm and gets better mileage to boot. It all depends on the rpm range that you want to run the motor in. Too much manifold is a bad thing too. Everything should be closely matched. Heads, cam ,carb, exhaust, etc.
