I know this question has been asked to death but im making sure that i have got it right.
This morning i dropped my 03 X of at the dealership to replace a trans temp sensor and ask about headgaskets. they gave me a quote and said they would chec to ake sure if that was the reason for missing coolant. he called me back and stated that it was my egr and some tube and would be a thousand dollars to fix. i told him i would wait and do it later because it seems when ever somthing goes wrong i come here first to validate it and it has worked fine so far.
my question is if i block it off will this fix the missing coolant issue or wil i stil have to replace the egr. he did say the were able to tell by looking at it that was my problem?????
just so everyone knows.....i am using the information from here to determine that my trans temp sensor was my prblem. how we are right cause this is alot better than the dealer charging me 100 bucks to pull a code that takes 10 min.

BowTieHatr has it right. Do you see any coolant leaking down the back of the engine on the passenger side. Also a thousand bucks sounds alittle high to me.
ok i picked up my truck this afternoon and taked with the service writer.....he has told me that i must replace my egr cooler. i have not noticed any coolant leaking but i can smell it faintly sometimes. he never mentioned the orange hose until i mentioned it in a description of the cooler. does this seen true. he also told me they noticed "moisture" in the cooler and thats why it has to be replaced. the cooler is $500 and the gaskets were $100. the labor is quoted at $800.
thats what i was hoping for. i thought i read that on the late 03 i could unplug the egr while the engine is off and the valve would be closed and this would be considered blocked off???
nope. just stops the exhaust gases from recirculating through the intake. you have to actually plug the up pipe/egr cooler to stop the exhaust gases from flowing through there.
there is one. I don't know where it is. someone will post it up soon hopefully. I would talk to the tech and ask him if he will do it while they are already in there if you have them work on your rig.

I am afraid at this time in the game you need to replace the EGR cooler if it is leaking into the EGR valve and that sounds like what the service writer is saying.
You can then block off the exaust from going into the cooler by changing the up pipe or welding it closed. But at this time if the egr cooler is leaking you need to change it. The by pass is only for the exhaust not the coolant.
