A couple weeks ago I posted a question about high mileage on an 02 7.3, and after alot of consideration, It's now sitting in my driveway=). Ive got a few plans for it right off the bat including a performance tuner, but first I wanna get a cold air intake. It already sounds badass with the 4inch exhaust, but I want a really nice intake that will give me great gains and sound like a beast. So school the noob here, I dont know too many brands as far as diesel engines go, so lay it out for me what yall think I should invest in.
Welcom to the wonderful world of diesels!!! and the FTE community!!!
Before you go spend 100's of dollars on a cold air intake system consider the NAPA 6637. Its an open element air filter That in most cases hooks right on to your air intake tube. A while ago someone on here said that there was a dyno test done on the AFE Stage 2 VS. The 6637 setup and the results were very similar. As for sound it does help i dont know if it sounds any better then the AFE but you'll save yourself a couple hundred bucks. Do a search in this Forum for 6637 and you will get all the info you need.
Oh and by the way start budgeting now there are soooo many good this to do to these trucks!!!
I have an afe intake, and I agree the 6637 filter flows and filters great. If your not swimming in dough, it's the right choice. I had a bunch of unexpected gift certificate $$ to spend and went with the afe and two proguard 7 filters. I love the set up, but they are overpriced.
Whatever you do, always put filtration before airflow, and you will have a beautiful long relationship with your truck.
Cool, so that intake doesnt require some sort of casing? it just sorta free rests in the engine bay? To tell the truth, this is my first REAL truck ive bought thats worth anything, so im new to modding period, so I dont know too much at all, but im here to learn.
Just to put this out there, ive budgeted about 200-250 extra for the intake, so say if i dont go with the custom napa one, what would you guys recommend.
i have the s&b cold air intake, i got mine off of ebay for under 200 shipped but now they got a new design which is a little more expensive but is prolly a better flowin design, and their filter do an awsome job on filterin the incomin air.
Once that is done, the next best thing that you can do is to improve the fuel supply to the engine.
Ford did a terrible job of designing that part of the truck and the best that you can expect is a bunch of foamy fuel.
Give some consideration to spending some time on that and you will happy you did.
The best is to move the pump to the end of the pickup, but if you don't want to get that drastic, then the MINUMUM that you should do is to eliminate all the quick connects between the fuel tank feed line and the fuel pump inlet. All the air gets into the fuel via those connections and the cure is to change them out to some basic FI rated fuel hose and double up on the screw clamps.
