I just had the engine rebuilt on my 02 7.3L. It stalls if I put it in reverse, stop quickly at a light or stop for too long at a light. It also idles wierd when stopped if it does not stall. I have had the cam sensor replaced just a few days ago but it still has this problem. Not sure where else to do. Any ideas on what it may be? Is this something small or is it a major problem?
Who did the rebuild and do you have any kind of warranty? Do you get a check engine light, or any other dash lights not functioning properly?
Most of what you describe seems related to the brake pedal. How long is too long at a stop light? What do you mean by idles funny? Does it jump up and down in RPM? Sound like a gas engine on a high performance cam? Sound like it's about to stall?
There's a lot of smart folks on here. Give us a little more information and we'll get this figured out.
Sounds alot like torque converter to me too. How does it do if it is in neutral or park, with your foot on the brake? If it is fine in neutral, could be in tranny. Not saying the tranny is shot, could be the torque converter, or maybe just a pinched wire from the rebuild process (engine removal and installation)
sorry, I am not mechanically inclinded but here goes.
Yes there is a warranty on the rebuild but i am beginning to question the qualification of the mechanic and shop.
yes sometimes i get a check engine light but not on a stall.
it idles funny means the idle goes up and then way down and then up again until it stalls or evens out. does not always stall but if i stop quickly at a light it stalls every time.
sometimes it will have some delay when i go to accelerate other times no.
sometimes it will rev to higher rpm's while i am driving along normal.
it is fine in nuetral 99% of the time.
i think that covers it all.
is a torque converter a tough fix? I am very concerned, i already have too much money in this truck and dont want to waste anymore.
one more thing. what is the likelyhood that any of these problems are related to the rebuild or are they just random things that are going out? I already had a random electrical problem that the mechanic said was because of some other part that just happened to go out.
please help.
I think we need to start at the beginning. Why did you have the engine rebuilt, and if it was it by recommendation of a shop, was it the same shop in question? Then, how many 7.3s have they rebuilt?
Of course, how many miles have you driven it since the rebuild? Let's see if we can get to the bottom of this. Of course if they can scan it they should, in your presence.

It really sounds like the torque converter is the culprit, refusing to unlock. Unfortunately the transmission has to come out of the truck to install a replacement.
Does the torque converter lock on an electrical signal, or a hydraulic signal from within the trans? Is there a wiring harness that can be unplugged to check?
ok, lets see, it was rebuilt because it was blowing smoke like crazy, the compression was below 200 on several cylinders. not sure how many rebuilds this shop has done but came highly recommended. I have only driven about 1000 miles since the rebuild. not sure about all the technical code stuff. I dont get any check engine light when the problem happens so not sure if it will even give a code. still curious is this a problem that would happen because of a poorly done rebuild or just a freak coincidence.
I would call it a freak coincidence. It's happened a lot over the years with Ford trannies. My Dad was a victim of a siezed up torque converter as well. Got it replaced and everything cleared up.
With only 200 psi on several cylinders you definately needed a rebuild!
Probably not the problem, but I had a minivan with a simular issue and come to discover the mechanic had put the cps 180 degrees out of wack. Spun it around and all my troubles went away. Don't know if this could happen on these vehicles.

Thier is really no way I know of to install the CPS wrong on these engines.

think I remember being told the torque unlocks hydraulically and if trans is low on fluid won't unlock correctly
