Rear end bouncing even under heavy load

I recently had an experience where the rear end of my truck started to bounce almost uncontrollably. I was doing about 70 with a full load (slide in camper) that did not exceed my GVWR, I crossed over some expansion joints that were followed by some ruts in the road, the rear end started to bounce and I played hell getting it under control. It has happened a couple of more times all in conjunction with these expansion joints and change in surface conditions while crossing bridges.

I'm thinking shocks but is it possible that it is a road harmonic thing with the short wheel base. I will replace the shocks as they're still OEM at 60,000 miles. But is there anything else I should be worried about. I'm not overly mechanically inclined and I have the dreaded fear of the unknown mechanic who will tell me I need to replace god knows what!! I'm new to the area I live in now and do not know of a reputable shop that will work on my truck.

Any suggestions/advice??

Another vote for shocks. The damperners are no longer effective, and are not controlling the axle the way they are supposed to. The added weight just makes the issue more pronounced.
I do not believe the sway bar will have any efect on this movement. You are not experiencing a sway, simply an uncontrolled bounce.
New set of dampers should take care of it.
Good luck.

I just thought if he is going to have weight in the truck going 70MPH he might want a sway bar

I am with you bro. I was not trying to disagree. Maybe slowing down with a load would be a good idea. 70 mph is running a little hot, especially with a camper.

Thanks for the discussion guys, I should know to keep the speed down, but those damn interstate's are so boring, I let it creep up on me. As to a rear sway bar I have the one that comes with the camper package, so I guess the answer would be yes I have a rear sway bar.

I will take the money Uncle sugar is going to throw at me and I will run out and stimulate the economy by buying shocks.

Thanks for your help,

Hayduke

Don't skimp on them rear shocks either since you are using that truck like
it is supposed to be used and a few extra bucks really does change how
long the new shocks will stay consistent. Be sure to say around 20k miles
you do a bounce test or pull one shock off and see how it reacts, You may
be able to control it but what if the wifey takes it out or you just happen to
hit a ice patch with it doing the pogo $50.00 is cheap compared to kissing
a jersey barrier!!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I had Rancho 9000XLs installed. I haven't had an opportunity to get out and about with them yet. I'm taking a trip to San Diego in a couple of weeks, hope this is it.

If the shocks don't completely fix it you may look at the tires. Properly inflated, heavy enough load rating, belts not coming loose inside (bulges), etc.
