I have an 03 7.3 4x4. Currently running a Superchips Max Micro Tuner. Thinking hard about the DP Tuner. I mostly drive highway miles (45 miles to work one way) But also drive offroad (hunting) and pull a swamp buggy (10k lbs with trailer) Don't care too much about mileage when pulling heavy trailer... I also have 4" Exhaust, Intake, Tranny Kit, no guages. Now to my questions: Will I see much increase in performance with the dp tuner over the superchips? Also what is the best way to eliminate the turbo surge that has gotten bad since the exhaust upgrade. Will the surge still be a problem with the dp tuner. Thanks in advance for the help.
You will see a huge difference with the DP. You might consider gauges even with the superchips. The cheapest solution to surge is the wicked wheel, or you could go with the ATS exhaust housing. With a stock turbo wheel you will get surge most of the time, because of the increase of air flow with performance products.
The surge can be fixed by going with a wicked wheel install. It's fairly straight forward and the WW costs about $100.
As for the superchips Vs. DP tuner; there has been a lot of discussion here by people that have had both and I have yet to see someone say that they weren't impressed when they went to the DP. Most say something along the lines of "I can't believe I waited so long to switch!"
I would highly recommend guages before doing anything else though. Especially towing 10K with a tuner you will see exhaust gas temps rise to an interesting level. Cal Jody or Diane and talk with them. They are great people who will steer you in the correct direction on tunes for your particular driving style and needs.
Thanks for the info. What guages should I do. I would assume Boost and EGT?? How difficult is the install? As far as the WW Install. I have read many posts about the advantages and disadvantages between the WW and the ATS Housing. What is the approx cost of the ats housing
Joe, I ran the superchip for 4 years on my truck. I thought that was the best. Thats what people around where I live was saying, you know that drill. After joining this great group of people i put all you see in my sig, and did all the work myself thanks to this same great group of people. Now the difference in the chips. Remember when you first put your Super Chip in Performance mood? That was way beyound stock. With the DP on 80 setting, it is twice what the superchip was. Don't get me wrong, I like my superchip because I can read codes with it, and it works great to hold down my paperwork in my shop.
Not sure on the housing. Kris and others can answer that question.
As for guages, those two are good but I would also recommend a trans temp guage as well. The one in the instrument cluster on your truck is a glorified idiot light. Once it reads hot it's too late, damage has already occured. If you are truely considering a DP they have a new F5 switch that fits into a guage pod, so you may want to consider going with a 4 guage A pillar pod from a place like Diesel manor. That is where i got my Isspro's and I love them. I wish that DP had had the new switcher when i got mine, i would have gone the 4 pod route for sure it's really nice. Their directions that come with it are fantatsic and they have a hotline for help if you run into a need. http://www.dieselmanor.com/gauges/gauge_kits_psd.asp
Many here have said they took about 4hours to put their guages in. I took my time and ran into a few tight spots and had to run to the Home depot once in the middle. It took me about 8-9 hrs on a saturday to do. Very straight forward.
My mileage was better with the older version SCMT on 60 hp and slighty better on 80 hp. There is no comparison with the DP Tuner as far as power and shifting are concerned. But, this drop could be also affected by the advent of ULSD.
