Heater Hose Quick Connect?

Heater Hose Quick Connect?
I blew a plastic quick connect on a heater hose yesterday. After buying the new plastic fitting to replace the broken one and installing it on the hose, I can not get the new hose fitting to seat on the heater core. Am I doing something wrong?? This seems like a pretty strait forward process, but I can not make the hose go on far enough for the the fitting to snap over the ring on the heater core tube. I have push just about as hard as I dare. The last thing I want to do is damage the heater core. I had to have it replaced a short whille ago and that was a MONSTER pain. No doubt that this is what caused this latest problem.
I would be VERY thankful for any advice!!!
