from what i have read on site, the fe blocks have a real problem with core shift.
my 390 is .060 over already, burns oil because it's worn out.
i was thinking about takeing another .020 over & making it a 428 bore, if my number are right? i live in germany, my truck is in texas, but plan on bring it here were i live now(just miss it to much) the only way i can do this is by going back to texas pull the engine rebuild it, & other repaires, then ship it.
question i have:
1. think it will take another .020 over? were to get it sonic tested?
2.anyone know a shop in abilene tx that can handle a resleve & the nessary machine work, that has a good rep. machine work here is cazy $, plus they don't know crap about v-8, a v-6 confused then LOL
ps i have just been reading post for almost 2 years never reposted because i have not messed with my 71 f100 in 12 years.
Most FE blocks won't handle a .030 over very well I think your .060 is at its limit. You can get a reman 390 for 1200.00 just use your old one as a core.
funny, i gotta a wife & 2 kids. i was wanting to make the truck into a family project (restoration), the kids would love it, & wife has never been in anything with this much torque.
on the .060 over from what i have read i guess i am lucky it handled it, this truck would only be used for fun, so the more power the better, it would never be a dalily driver. i think a basic rebuild would never be enough. i like doing thing most have not, fuel injection would be in the future.

I was thinking by the time you left Germany, spent a month getting the truck rebuilt and ready for shipping, and getting all back to Germany will cost a pretty penny.
Hey go rent one of them fancy sports cars over there, get a thrill, and a cold shower.

John
they go fast on the top end but there are very few that have anything close to what a fe has.
i did it already, it fun running 260 km hour, but you can make a 1990 bmw 535 do that, nothing great.
i know how to do the work, got all the tools, its just the machine work over here would not be as good
Well you could Look up Mark Artis with the texas Outsider's.. I know Mark does alot of Chassis work in there shop...and he could refer you to a decent Machine shop as he runs a killer FE himself...and they compain a few other nice rides out of there shop also..
I know a few that have went thru Flatlander Racing there in Texas...But I belive they farm there machine work out? So I have been told ? But I dont know that as a fact...
There's a quick and dirty way to tell what kind of quality block your looking at in terms of core shift.
Look at various cast bosses on the block that have machined bores in them. Things like the front and rear cam bosses, lifter bosses, and the distributor hole are all good places to start.
For the most part the more centered the machined holes are in the cast bosses, the less core shift the block has experienced.
All of the holes in the block are machined in relation to one another and not to the casting, so if core shift occured all of the holes will be in the right spot compared to one another, but not compared to the block.
But like i said, this is no guarantee. This is a quick "there's a block at the local yard, should i consider buying it" type deal.
Somewhere around here I have a picture of a 305 chevy block that i got ahold of in highschool. The front cam bore was offset about .2" inside the cam boss, you could literally just look at it and see it was WAY off center. The block couldn't even take one overbore the shift was so bad.
thanks
i know about just looking at the machine surfaces just to get a idea how bad the core shift might be.
i think i will either have to have it resleved or replaced, as it is .060 over already.
i wonder if i can have it resleved to a 428 bore??? that sound kinda nice, but i bet that exspensive $400-600 price reange. anyone ever done it around abilene area. i guess what ever size bore the cost would still be in the same range?
standard bore is 4.05 on a 390 taking it to a 4.13 is pushing it. find a 360 block in a yard. same bore same block differnt stroke thats all. amarillio tx

what i mean is if i had it resleved i could just have it done with the sleves to make it the 428 bore instead of the 390 bore, the costs should be much differant
