Opened the hood today and found a small splash of coolant on the stock cold air intake that went to the airbox. When I looked up at the hood it was a little wet right where the radiator cap would be. About five months ago I was under the truck and had coolant dripping on me. I thought it was a loose hose clamp but now it looks like the cap spits out some coolant every now and again. The temp gauge read ok. The water level when cold is just obove the core tubes and up to the cap when hot. Any body else ever deal with this?
Ill give it a try. Can someone tell me how coolant would get from the overflow tank to the radiator. I just dont see how this could happen. If you overheat the coolant and steam can push open the cap but how would the cap open to let water get in? I have seen manuals that say to put coolant in the tank to the mark but this dont make sence to me.
what year is your truck? on my 97 the only way to get coolant in is to put it in the reservoir. there is no radiator cap. there is a bit water hose that goes from the bottom of the rreservoir to the coolant system.
Aint it strang that is getting out of the cap and under the hood? I would think it would just go into the recovery tank. Guess it might just be the cap is weak.
Ok Madvan but dig this. Just went to Rockauto and they list about 3 brands of caps all 13 psi. When I saw that I thought some dingbat put the wrong cap on mine because mine is rated for 7 then I saw a 7 at the bottom of the list. Dont know if it matters so I am lost right now.
dont get scared, probably a cap. but not always will water leak back into the cylinder at the beginnings of a head gasket failure. do a bottle test on it.
i spoke too soon on this. it's a test we do on the big trucks, would work for our truck but you need a modified radiator cap to do it and have the engine hot so the thermostat is open.
attach a radiator cap with a hose coming out of it. fill a bucket full of water. fill a bottle (preferrably one with measurements on it) with water. note amount of water in bottle. put hose in bottle. quickly upend the bottle down in the bucket of water, holding it upside down in the water keeping the hose in the bottle. any air coming out of the cooling system will displace the water in the bottle. after a minute quickly flip the bottle right side up and out of the bucket. note the difference in measurement of water before and after. dont ask me the specs, but if it empties say a 1 liter pepsi/coke bottle in a minute or less, then you have problems. before you start you can put the hose in the bucket water and if it looks like a jacuzzi jet then you know something is wrong.
probably not too helpful since you most likely dont have an extra rad cap lying around, i just blurted it out when i saw compression in coolant.
Thanks. What Ill do is get a new cap. If I still have problems I will know its not the cap and have a spare to mod. Right now I am just not sure if 7psi or 13 is the right cap. Or if it matters.
