I'm back.(still)

I have a 84 300, I am going to put in a new cam (RV), lifters, push rods, rocker arms, timing gears, distributor, harmonic balancer, intake manifold, carb, and headers.

Can you guys suggest brands, models, best place to purchase?

Also given the grocery list, is there anything that you can think of that i am overlooking as far as bolt on items? any machine work will have to be bypassed.

Your help is appreciated in advance. so Thanks!

I don't think there are very many options for after market stuff for the 300. I have never built one. Just thought I move this back to the top and someone who has might see it and have some advice. Guess the thing you'd really like to know is what to stay away from if there is anything.

Good luck.

The problem I saw when I looked into stuff a few years backs was that unlike all the stuff for the Jeep 4.0, nothing was CARB or EPA approved for the 300, so you can't smog 'em with these parts on them. If smog checks are not an issue, check out this build.

Can you even buy a harmonic balancer for a 300? There are pulleys of course, but since any straight 6 engine is internally balanced, it seems there would be no need for one. Just curious.

is harmonic balancer not the term for it?

Now you got me second guessing.

The pulley at the front of the motor on the end of the crankshaft, that has the timing marks on it. Is that not a harmonic balancer? The pulley I have is turned off from what it should be and is causing me to have to time the motor off of the number 2 cylinder. People are telling me it is because the rubber in the harmonic balancer has slipped. Either way, when I do a search for it, at the parts stores they tell me it is about 90 bucks, and that they will have to order it.

My impression of a harmonic balancer was that it is weighted such that it counteracts the natural off-balance of a standard crankshaft. But since a straight 6 is already balanced, it wouldn't need any kind of eccentric weight. Maybe it's still called a harmonic balancer but I wouldn't think it acts like a normal one on a V8, say. I could be wrong though.

On my 300, the timing marks and numbers are on the timing cover, and there is a mark on one of the crankshaft pulleys to mark with white-out. That's backwards of my 351W and 400, which have a pointer on the timing cover, and a harmonic balancer with the timing marks and numbers stamped on the balancer.

The harmonic balancers are two peice. There is an inner hub and an outer bonded together kind of like a motor mount is. My understanding is this was done to balance the harmonics or vibrations.

Correct. It is not for primary balance.

An inline six has perfect primary balance due to the math of the who 6 into 360 thing. That doesn't mean the rotating assembly is balanced. That is a different issue and it is possible to have a real shaker 6 if it's got pistons 2 oz. different.

Where the harmonic balancer comes it is absorbing the power pulses that hammer the crank 3 times per revolution, accelerating it and then slowing it down each time. Without these devices, cranks will crack under some conditions or with enough time.
