just curious here ive been pluggin my truck in all winter but these past few days ive plugged it in over night and it does nothing i have power just wondering if anyone has ever had to replace there plug for the engine block heater before
Clean up the plug, and measure the resistance between the hot and the common with a meter. When cold should have a resistance between 13.5-14.5 ohms. Check the cord where it connects to the engine by the oil filter also. If it tests out bad, you can buy the cord, or the cord and block heater on e-bay pretty cheap. It's an easy fix.
well i went out there and cleaned the terminals one of them seemed to be pretty black but i cleaned it off a little bit but its damn cold here a bout 1 or 2* and when you plug it in will it have a distinct noise or do you really have to pay attention for it.
It'll be just a quiet hum. You can use piece of pipe or dowel rod to touch the block through the driver's side wheel opening as a crude stethescope. It will help you to hear better.
But checking the resistance will tell you the exact condition it's in.

why would you need a tool to help you hear it! just put your head in there and you cant miss it! if its working!
yea i mite have to do that im not hearing anything and i tried touchin my block with a pipe to see if i could here anything and nothing so ill have to replace my plug thanks guys for the help
If you have a trouble light that has an outlet on it, turn on the light, and then plug the block heater into the outlet on the cord. If the heater is working, you should probably see the light dim when you plug in the heater (depending on the quality of your trouble light cord).
I am not sure that I would recommend leaving the heater plugged into your average el-cheapo trouble light cord.
