please help v10

well here i go this might take a min but bear with me, i have a 99 250 super duty v 10 got the truck cheap but has some issues, this is what i fixed, all exuust manifold bolts are new now, that was not cheap, i had an insuficiant flow code for my egr system pulled vac. on egr seems to work fine, repaced both the dpfe sensor and the vac. control modual, codes went away but the problem did not. but now i have 4 codes, numbers 154, 153 and i think 163,164, bascilly lean then rich bank 1, truck will run great then all of a sudden fall on its face like the gremlin under the hood is retarding the timing, no power, sometimes so bad i have to pull off the road then like magic as the pedal is on the floor the gremlin advances the timing and away i go. very odd and i can not figure it out. also some times at idle it will just start camming like a damn drag car the whole truck bounces looks and sounds cool, but really is not. PLEASE HELP PULLING MY HAIR OUT WITH THIS ONE.

sounds like it could be a bad knock sensor

How many miles are on it?
HAve you done a tune up? if it is time I would chage the plugs, air filter, fuel filter, new oil, clean the MAS.

probly after you do all that it will run better, and you might be able to narrow down to exactly what is wrong

Try this; disconnect your catalytic converter (or converters) at the y-pipe and take your truck for a test drive. I had an F-150 do about the same thing, it turned out to be a clogged catalytic comverter.

The cat won't get hot if it is clogged. What happen on mine is the pre-converter matrix shattered for some reason, sending the contents into the converter and clogging it.

We had a F350 with a V10 doing the same thing at work, dealer said it looked like bad cats. The fleet mechanics unhooked the exhaust and found it did the same thing. Eventually they traced it to a fuel pump problem - it had good pressure at idle but would drop off while driving. They had to put a fuel pressure gauge on and drive it around to verify it, could watch the pressure drop down to 3-4 psi while driving then climb back up to 30 or so when idling. Replaced the fuel pump and its been fine ever since.

if you are getting a lean code then you have 1. a vacuum leak 2. a mass air flow sensor that is bad or needs cleaned. 3.fuel pressure problem or injectors. 4. bad o2 sensors. if it is only on 1 bank then the most like cause would be a bad o2 sensor or a vacuum leak where the intake meets the head. to much air is getting in to the system or it thinks that to much air is getting in. if it was a mass air flow senor then you would have lean codes for both banks. same with fuel pressure. the best thing to do is switch your 2 o2 sensors and clear the code. drive it for a while and see if the code switches to bank 2. if it does then the o2 sensor is bad. if it don't then start looking for cracked intake or vacuum leak.

i really don't think you have a vaccuum leak problem, it would do it ALL the time. I also think that checking the MAF and the fuel pressure will turn out to be a key clue here.

if it were a fuel pressure or mass air flow sensor it would have lean codes for both banks, not one. swap your 2 o2 sensors and see if the codes folow to bank 2. that will more than likely be your problem

you may not have a knock but if the sensor is bad or going bad it can react just like it senses knock which will then retard the timing,my buddies nissan frontier supercharged one minute would run great then loose power for a while shut it down for a few minutes would run great for a while then loose power again,he never had any knocking, replaced the knock sensor problem solved,I don't say this is your problem but just throwing a suggestion out there for you from a very similar past experience even though a different manufacturer
