Smile Battery

My battery is the original one from October 2000. I remember reading somewhere you should replace them at 5 years. Well its been 7yrs 4mos. I live here in Minnesota where the temps have been zero for 30 out of 60 days. It was sitting for a week in this weather. I was contemplating plugging it in last night before i fired it up today. I stepped in it last night, could not help but fire it up. she was slow for a couple of seconds, then fired right up. at what point does one replace the battery? thanks dudes !!

I think it's about time. Your battery could last 3 more years or 3 more hours. The trade off is where will you be when it quits? I think it's probably worth the $75 or so to not get stuck somewhere.

Joe's right!

You could pull it, clean it up and top it off with distilled water. Put it on slow charge and then run a load test on it. That would give you a fairly good indication as to it's condition, but if you have to pay for any of that, or if your time is better spent elsewhere, you'd be better off just buying one on sale.

When it doesn't start the truck anymore

My stock battery lasted me a little over 10 years before it died (ironicly, it died a couple weeks after I installed a subwoofer and amplifier)

Most auto parts stores will run a free battery test like MrBSS suggested, and would give you a good idea of where you're at.

Either way...I would probably replace it for peace of mind.

Optimas are a little over-rated IMO. They are great batteries...but at $180?

I paid $80 for my 1040CCA, 3-year replacement warranty at AdvanceAuto (their "Titanium" series).

i only paid 140 for my huge red top. it was the biggest one they could get.

and that 3 year replacement, itsnt free replacement, its pro-rated. if anything happens to the red top, you get another one free. they dont say its only worth so much of a %

And yeah, the replacement on the AdvanceAuto batteries are free replacements. We had to take the van's battery back after 2 years...
