I've read so much about tuners on this forum and all the different opinions, that I thought I'd share mine.
First of all I had a tune built for me, no off the shelf stuff.
I have a '99 f250 V10 2V with a 6" lift and 35's w/ 3.73 gears. I have never gotten over 10.5 mpg on the highway and it has had a ping since the day I bought it and it now has 120k. I work for Saleen (mustangs), running the Techline dept. and I had JDM Engineering (they make custom tunes for us) make me a tune for my truck. They said that they adj. the fuel trims, and the lock up of the torque conv. so it stays engaged longer. I installed the tune on Monday. I made the same trip I made two days before and this time I got over 13 mpg while averaging around 75-80 mph. the power difference is also very noticable, especially when pulling the hills, it would keep the converter locked up and just torque up and over the hills and never did I hear one single ping.
If I loved my V10 before, I now love it that much more.
Did you get any other trans programs done? I am looking for one to hold OD. I live in a hilly area and it drives me nuts that every time I hit the smallest hill while towing it will kick down. I have talked to a few of the SCT tuners and they said they can program that in for me, just thougth you may have first hand information.
yes, it holds overdrive great and the shifts feel great. not too stiff and banging, just firm and nice. the shift also changes with how much pedal your giving it. I honestly don't have one single complaint. i"m around performance cars and trucks all day, and all I can say is that truck runs the best it ever has.
I have a similar setup to you (37's, 3.73's) and get about 8mpg. Truck is in need of a tune up (plugs, fuel filter replacement, etc) so I'm hoping that'll help some, but your gains are pretty substantial, would be nice to have.
the tune is for 91 octane. but i got those results with 89 octane and the lean and/or octane ping is completely gone.
They will make you a tune for whatever you want.
You tell them what you use your truck for, what your expecting out of it and they will make your tune, adj. torque conv. lock-up, shift points, timing etc. to what you're going to use your truck for.
