Hi. I have just bought a 2002 4.0 Auto explorer XLT and have found a problem with the transmission.
When I accelerate hard or during high revs going up hill the transmission jerks and clunks. I have tried to find other posts with a diagnosis/fix to the problem with no luck. Any help is appreciated.

My 04 Ex is at the dealer with the same problem........they said it was a soleniod. We shall see..........take in to Ford and have them do a diagnostic check.
The cars done now, havent picked up yet though.
If you can dump it Explorers after 2001 are problematic and costly to own.

Your 02 is a study of one. Do a search for Explorer transmission problems theres reams of data all pointing to a unreliable transmission.
Your EX is a fluke, you got lucky many others have not.
They're many reported problems with the Explorer right here on this website all one has to do is look.
A study of one has no meaning in real world terms.
