How hard is dropping the T-Case?

How hard is it to drop an Np205 out of my truck? is it just the front bolts, unhook my rear driveshaft and lower it with a hydraulic jack?

I've never done one before so I have no idea what I'm getting into.. my Chilton's makes it seem easy but that doesn't mean a whole lot with this book, 5 steps could be a 15hour job.

My engine runs so damn good right now, I have to start looking into my drivetrain, I've got oil leaks everywhere.

its easy, linkage disconnect.. crossmember disconnect, driveshafts disconnect.. then just lower it down.. really simple to reseal too. the np205 is great.

205 tcase

I hate to break the news but its takes longer than youd think. I took a 203 out of mine and put a 205 in. The hardest part about it is the tcase is its awkward for a jack. I took a backhoe and lifted the back of the truck up really high where 2 ppl could work on their knees not their backs. it definatly take 2 ppl.

ive done both 203 and 205 and a 203/205 combo on my own with ratcheting straps and 2x4's its not that hard dont let people scare you out of it..

take the trans tunnel out and use the 2x4's across it and ratcheting straps as a small hoist.

another trick i do ( i do everything in my driveway outside) is take the seat out for extra clearance if im really getting into it.. and use my engine hoist through the door extend it into the cab tunnel area.. make it a piece of cake.. then you just have to position it and slide it togeather.. ive done this with trans and xfer case connectoed togeather too when replaceing them both.. or replacing just the trans i lower both them this way.

Like Ray said, it's not that hard. A bit un steady on a jack. I would imagine that a trany jack would help. I did mine by myself (my 12 year old daughter ran the jack handle) in about an hour not including the drive lines.

Well damn, you made it seem harder than I thought it would be, heh.

How heavy are one of these transfer cases?

Oh, that's bigger than I thought it would be..

glad I asked, I was planning on setting it on my jack, balancing with one hand and lowering the jack with the other, I think that plan wouldn't have worked very well.

You saved me *at least* my transfer case, possibly my life.. thanks

I'm sure most people woldn't have to be told this kind of information, but I've done some pretty dumb stuff.. and I keep doing dumb stuff.. this truck is going to end up killing me one day

I wonder if these $50 transmission jack adapters (for a normal floor jack) I'm seeing on eBay are any good? Lord knows I have plenty of other work to finish on the truck while I wait for it to be shipped here.

dont waste your money on that crap they are not as safe as remioving the tunnel and lower it down with straps from there.. they tip them jacks over and can hurt you.

I never though about taking the seat out and doing it that way. thats probaly the best idea ive heard. although the backhoe made it pretty easy after i tried jacking it with a floor jack and the thing kept falling on me.

ive done it through the tunnel hole with or WITHOUT the seat in the way, depending on how lazy i was and how much time i had.. you can do it either way from inside.
