Does anyone know about a 491ci engine, i started taking apart my engine (wich is suppose to be an 460) cause i have to replace the gaskets for the heads. Then i saw that someone wrote the number 491 on the firewall and also the fact that it has a fairly new Edelbrock carb. Can anyone tell me if there is such a thing as a 491ci ?
The 490 or 491 engine was a bored/ stroked 460 that Ford Motor company was working on in the late 80's. It was used as a test engine in the E-350 ambulance chassis. Ford donated the engines to some ambulance companies around the country (I know they did with Southwest Ambulance in Phoenix, Az). Not sure what happened with their experiment, but it looks like it was'nt an improvement over the 460. could'nt tell you much more, but there was not much of a difference from the standard 460's. After having problems with the fuel recircuation problem, they switched to diesel engines in the E-350's.
p.s. the fuel recirculation problems were from ambulances running constantly at idle and the fuel travelling from the gas tank to engine compartment, and heating up when the gas in the fuel lines were near the exhaust manifold, it would recirculate the hot gas back into the tank, causing the gas to get hotter, and hotter with time, until it would blow out the gas cap. There was a gas ambulance that blew up underneath the parking canopy in Scottsdale in the mid to late 80's. Fords inital answer was to tell consumers to not fill the tanks more than 3/4 full
