HELLO TO ALL MY FORD FAMILY. NEED HELP. MY 98 EXPEDITION (98k) 5.4L GOT A C.E.L. ABOUT 2 MOS. AGO AND NOW SHE'S RUNNING REAL ROUGH. GOT IT SCANNED AND I HAVE THE P0171 AND P0174 CODES (SYSTEM TOO LEAN BANKS 1 AND2). I HAVE READ ON THIS FORUM THAT MORE THEN 1 O2 SENSOR IS VERY UNLIKELY TO GO BAD AT THE SAME TIME SO I SEARCHED FOR THE INFAMOUS LEAK AT THE 90 ELBOW BUT FOUND NO LEAKS. I CHANGED ALL MY PLUGS AND BOOTS, OIL AND FILTER CHANGE, AIR FILTER, FUEL FILTER, PCV VALVE AND CLEANED MY THROTTLE BODY BUT STILL NO LUCK. ANY ADVISE AS TO WHAT ELSE I CAN LOOK FOR TO TAKE CARE OF THIS PROBLEM? ALSO, AM I AT RISK TO DAMAGE OTHER COMPONENTS IF I CONTINUE TO DRIVE HER WITH THIS CONDITION? THANKS
Secondly, try cleaning the Mass Air Flow Sensor with the appropriate cleaner. ( I used electrical connection cleaner ) And my problem, ( same as yours with same codes ) was fixed. Just make sure to disconnect the battery before you do this.
If this doesn't help, it very well could be the O2 sensors. There are 4 but the 2 closest to the manifolds are usually the bad ones.
SMIGGS, I cleaned the MAF real good and re-assembled everything, turned her on and still had the same problem. I climbed in the engine bay after hearing an obvious leak around the throttle body area that wasn't as obvious before and after checking all behind the engine I found a hose with nice gash in it. I obviously missed it the first time when I checked for leaks. The hose comes off the PCV valve which is on the passenger side and wraps around to the back of the intake manifold. Part # from ford is F75Z-6C324-JA it comes with the PCV. Cost is $36. Thanks everyone! She is back running strong
