I have a 2004 SC F150 w/ 5.4. It has a slight tick or chatter when it is ideling. It seems to be louder now that the weather is cold. Is this something I should worry about? I don't think that it is but it just makes me mad to pay so much money for a truck and it to sound like this.
I dont mean to worry you but here is my story.I purchased my 2005 f-150 XLTs-crew 5.4L v8 with 29,800 miles on it around two months ago from a major Ford dealer in my area. The trucks history shows it came from Wissconson and was a personal lease its in mint condition apperance wise, thats why I puchased it ( This truck has never had a thing in its bed as far as I coud tell)Any way about a week into driving the truck I noticed a Ticking noise comming from the engine area (very loud at the passenger wheel well) this would only occur only when the truck was warmed up and only at idle speed , if you gas the truck the noise would go away untill it idled down again. After several trips back to the dealer they finally heard what I was talking about and the truck sits at the dealer for well over a week as they rip the heads apart. They are saying that the valves must be changed out (they stated they can do this without removing the heads from the block?THEY MUST BE MAGICIANS) I AM PISSED I SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT A CHEVY (I AM JUST A SUCKER FOR A FORD . I HAVE A 1931 MODEL A THAT PUTS THIS TRUCK TO SHAME . HENRY FORD MAY BE TURNING IN HIS GRAVE!
I think it sounds like the timing chain. Some do it and some don't. I got a 97 Expedition and it has don it for years. It now has 182,000 on it. Mine is louder when the engine is cold though.
I've got the same noise in my 2004 5.4, two different dealers told me its the timing chain clattering.
Make sure you are using a oil filter with a check valve in it. The check valve prevents oil from draining when you shut off the engine causing the chain clatter.
My 05 fx4 does the same and they told me it was the timming phazar.
I also heard that the 3rd valve is controled electronicaly and not off the cams so i wonder if it could be the valve "motor"???
my engine has the same problem I plan on trading it in before my warranty is up ive been to the dealership several times and i always get a good run around , they are so nice when i am there to buy a truck though
The noise is related to the cam phazzers, there has been a tsb out for the 04s. I had mine done under warranty and the noise is practically eliminated. I can't recall when the new phazzers went into production, but the tsb will tell you. Worse when cold out due to lower oil pressure until the temps come up. Just a nuisance, not a durability issue.
I don't know how many miles you have crownline but I know the mod motors are notorious for exhaust leak off the manifold......more prevalent when cold and on the passenger side. My 01 4.2 did it two of my buddy's v10s do it and my buddy with an 03 5.4L does it too, all were passenger side and all had over 100k when they started doing it though. mine started at about 120k my buddys 5.4 started at 101k not sure on the v10 guys.
