I have a brake sticking problem that comes and goes randomly in length and interval. Only on one side so its either the caliper or hose. Am I correct to assume that if a caliper sticks, it'll do it everytime you apply the brakes? Its not the slides as while it was sticking, I rocked the wheel and the caliper moved. I'll have to wait till it happens again, then if I loosen the bleeder and fluid comes out its the hose, correct?
If one of the pistons was sticking would you rebuild that one piston, both pistons, or get a reman? My bleeder actually works so I'd try to rebuild them
first.
So theres plastic and aluminum pistons, correct?
The plastic pistons are called phenolic pistons, the other is stainless,If you rebuild a caliper with phenolic pistons, replace the piston too,as it can swell and cause problems also.If you rebuild one, then do the other, allways rebuil or replace in pairs when it comes to brakes. You can get reman, new,or rebuild them yourself.I have been doing brakes since 1981,it is alot easier to replace that to rebuild, its not hard at all to rebuild a caliper, there is nothing to them, but just alot easier to replace time wise.Either way you go,rebuild or replace, make sure you lube the calipers where they will slide better, meaning the bolts and the slide pins.
It's a good idea to replace the sticking caliper even if it's working again. If it failed once it will happen again at the worst possible time. Then it might cost a wheel bearing if it stays stuck or even someone getting hurt. Brakes are not a luxury. Calipers don't cost that much and as mentioned above, replace in pairs. Just my opinion.
