First Tow
I was watching this site regularly before I decided to buy my new 2008 FX4 F-350 CC, SB w/ 6.4 L diesel. I received my new truck December 12 and traded in my 2003 F-350 CC LB V-10. I tow a Weekend Warrior LE3105 and when fully loaded is around 15,000 lbs.
I now have 1300 miles on my new truck and took my 5th wheel out camping for the first time. Here are my first impressions vs. V-10 gas motor:
- Power. I can tell you I hit a few grades that required my V-10 to be full throttle (5,000 RPM) that my diesel just cruised up the grade at 2,500 RPM. The power with the diesel makes life so easy while pulling. I never once felt as if I was pushing the engine near it's limits.
- Braking. OMG I had the Prodigy brake controller on my old truck and it never felt as natural as the new ford controller. Overall braking was improved significantly over my 2003 truck.
- Comfort. Yes this truck has power and stopping ability. But man this things drives like a Cadillac. I barely knew the trailer was behhind me.
- My 2008 truck is twice the truck of my 2003.
- Worth every penny I paid !
- As far as fuel mileage, I am getting 13 MPG without towing and 12 while towing thus far. However, I didn't tow very far to go camping.
- To combat the fuel mileage I installed a 50 gal Transferflow tank.
Good to hear about your towing trip. I just bought a 2008 F350 DRW and am getting ready to pull my SLC 3705 WW to Glamis next week. 1200 mile round trip. I look forward to the drive. I was pulling with a 2004 short bed and I am sure the ride will be less "White Knuckled."

Great turning radius, great stopping, great power and a very smooth ride. I am not even using air bags on this truck.

With 6K miles on the truck we never got that kind of MPG towing (13K + 5th wheel) 1MPG difference between towing and not towing is amazing.
We pulled the same camper 3 years with the same truck but a 05 V-10. Never pulled a grade that required full throttle on the V-10 and we pulled some good ones. The 6.4L pulls the same grades better than the V-10 for sure and at a lower RPm as that is what diesel are designed to do. but not all that much better. Unless there is no concern about Boost and EGT temps.

I also installed a 50 gal Transferflow Auxillary tank in the bed so I don't have to stop often for fuel.
With the size of this trailer 39' I have to look for truck stops or big fuel stations that I can fit in when I am hooked up. It makes it alot easier when I need to fuel up when I am not hooked up and I can shop for the best price and load up when the price is good.
Did you say only 6 MPG while towing?? Ouch! I have the exact same truck, only Black, and will be going to Glamis next week from Sacramento. I look forward to towing the new 2008 SLC 3705 with the PSD!!! Did you really say 6 MPG???
