I thought the FX4 package took the place of the old Off Road package?
Yes/no. If I recall correctly, both the current (2008+) & earlier optional Off Road package included skid plates, 4x4, limited slip rear differential, and a tire "upgrade" (generally just an AT tire). The FX4 option package was Rancho-branded shocks, skid plates, and the FX4 stickers. While it was only available on a 4x4, it still did not cover the limited slip.

The King Ranch & Harley-Davidson Super Duties are a bit different than the other trim levels. Both had body colored door handles with chrome grills. They did not get the full Chrome Package, but they did not share the black door handles found on just about every other Super Duty trim level.
If you price out the FX4 package and put them in a XLT the XLT will cost more. I have an FX4. The draw back is there are only 5 color choices with the FX4. If you like chrome, then the FX4 is not for you....cost a bunch more.
So it also sounds like the new FX4 package incorporated some of the old XLT Sport package (body color grill, door handles, bumpers and mirrors) like my truck?

You can add the chrome package and it seems around here like most of the FX4 have the chrome grill.
I think it all boils down to what YOU want and what you like, need and want to spend....I bought tha Lariat, for me it has everything I need and want, I added the 4x4 Off Road Package and the ride, comfort and price are all great!! best wishes and luck to you. Order your truck, use a Ford X Plan PIN and geta great deal on the truck YOU want, and not what the dealer has in stock on hand...just be ready for the 8 week wait!!!
I got the Fx4 package for a reason - the skid plates! I'm not sure if most people are just driving these trucks around on the roads all the time, but I come across times when the belly is rubbin' the ground so-to-speak. The little price difference, in my opinion, makes it worth the added protection. I'm not sure what a direct order of the individual plates would be if you didn't get them, but probably pretty similar. The tires, also, were better.
Okay, but using that logic you might as well just get an XL. But in the XLT trim, I personally think the tires and skid plates alone make the FX4 worth the money. In fact, it is sad that you cannot add the FX4 package to the Lariat trim.
Bill
Hey Bill, I have a 2005 SD cc/sb Lariat with the FX4 package. I found the truck at a dealership, I got lucky, it has everything but the GPS. I also have the chrome package on the truck, so my grill, bumpers, and others are indeed chrome.

After I wrote that I learned that there are Lariat trucks with the FX4 stickers. So, as you know with your own truck, you can add the FX4 package to a Lariat truck. I'm not exactly sure how, because on the Ford vehicles build site, if you select Lariat trim they do not offer the FX4 as an option. They do offer an off-road package, so I assume that gets you the FX4 stickers, skid plates, shocks, tires, and whatever other stuff not already on the Lariat. That's just a guess on my part. But I don't know how else you would specify it.
Mines the XLT with FX4 package. I really miss the overhead console with lie-o-meter that everyone talks about. Other than that the XLT pretty much suits my needs. Would love the Lariat too.
I also have the chrome package. I don't care for the body color grill and bumpers, personally.

Me too! Would not be without them. Although, what Ford gives us is pathetically limited. The fuel tank skid is a must, being plastic, and the transfer case skid plate is fair. But they really need something right behind the front bumper to cover all the lines going into the cooling area. You scrape that stuff off on an approach and you'll be in deep doodoo. There should be something there but I'm not sure how it would be mounted. The other thing is the location of the trailer plug. You'll drag that thing off easily on a steep departure. Dodge puts theres through the bumper. That's so much better. It would suck to pull your RV to your off-road area and munch your plug so you can't connect to go home.
If you just want the skid plates dont waste your money on the extra pkg. When I ordered my 02 the dealer added the plates when it came in for 150 bucks. On the 08s the FX4 pkg is different than it use to be, like said it's a trim level, but if you are just upgrading to get the skidplates, dont waste the money just have the dealer put the plates on before you take it home.

Hey Bill, I have the overhead console, but it's a smaller one because I have the sun/moon roof option. Also my lie-o-meter is in the dash, it's actually pretty close on my truck.
You have to remember...FOR 2008, FX4 IS A TRIM PACKAGE, not an add-on option. It is just like "XLT" or "Lariat" is a trim package. You cannot order the FX4 package to be added to your Lariat or XLT anymore.
