exhaust studs

Why is it that these "rot" off? Is it just because off "lack of protection" from the elements? Or just "lousy" material? Mines still look ......Ok, after 85k....afterall, i just bought the truck a month ago, and I was just looking at the studs this morning and wondering why they go by the wayside so quickly.

from what i've been told by a mechanic buddy is that they dont "rot off" but more or less get sheared off. i was told that the manifold expands and contracts differently and will eventually shear off the front and rear mounting studs. dont know if its 100% correct, but i'll let you know, mine goes in the shop wednesday for this problem. wish me luck.

At 137k mine are sheard off at the front and rear and the centers are just thin strips of rust with a tiny ball of rust where the bolt heads used to be. The bolts in the exhaust flanges are rusted down to a coke bottle shape and look like the slightest bump will break them. There are no perceptable leaks but I know right now its just going to go one day (soon) and I dont want to see that bill, Im looking at a full exhaust.

Due to the high heat, exposure to atmosphere, and repeated heat up/cooldown cycles the exhaust system is extremely suseptable to corrosion. The pipes take longer to rust because they are aluminized steel slowing the corrosion process, the manifold studs have to be made of steel to maintain strength at high temperatures.
