My IP has finally started to fail permanently. It was leaking slightly for a while, but now it's become a more steady drip and it's getting harder and harder to start. Plus I don't think the advance is working because it's not nearly as loud as it used to be on a very cold day. Once it starts it runs fine, although power is lacking.
I did a search through the forum because I thought I saw posts that mentioned precautions that needed to be taken when replacing the IP. One of them had something to do with the drive gear, but I don't remember what it was about.
So what do I need to do to replace the IP? Should I disconnect the gear and leave it in place, or remove the housing, mark a couple of teeth, and take the gear off with the IP? Are there any other precautions I need to take?
I plan to take it to a local diesel shop to get the timing set. I don't want to mess with trying to get it by ear, other than to get it driveable. One place quoted $85.
One good thing is that my next door neighbor's dad works at a Ford dealer and can get me the IP at cost. He just needs the part number. My pump should be a DB2-5028, but is that the part number he needs or is there a longer Ford part number?
