Cool left front ratchet noise????

It was snowing this morning on the way to work so I pulled in the 4x4 before I left the driveway. on the way in every time I made a left hand turn I had a ratcheting noise from the left front hub area. It wasn't the normal CV type clicking sound, but a much faster clicking like working a ratchet...

could this be my auto hub?

I would have to agree. Probably your auto hub. You may be able to pull it and clean it up. May have too much grease packed in there.
Have you used them much before this? Were they making any similar sounds the last snow we got?

It worked fine last week. I only used 4WD to get into my drive way, they plowed the street and left the snow bank at the end of the drive. The street was covered with ice. The big snow we had a few weeks ago 4WD worked fine.

Go in and out of 4x4 a couple times and see if the problem remains. Could of not been fully engaged just this one time.

If you still have a problem, manual hubs are the way to go.
They can be had for $100 and install in an hour.

I really like having my auto hubs. I can just pull in the 4WD when ever I need it and I don't have to get out and fight with muddy or frozen manual hubs... I asume thay are fairly tough in the cold weather.

I am from KY and usually only delt with mud, the ocasional light snow.

There are no CV's on ur trucks. Have you ckecked the axle shaft u-joints? The hub prob took a dump on ya. Its fairly common. The factor hubs are expensive. It has been discussed many a times about the switch and even if you dont like manuals when you have them you will. Just turn them on before you start to play or leave them on for the winter. Thats what I do with my F350. But now our weather is all nice and cold and no snow so I have them unlocked.

hey the QL2 fella is smart. I spend more time under the neighborhood and coworkers GM products than my truck, so just a little slip of the fingers (toung)...

I tried putting the truck in and out of 4WD 4 times last night and the noise went away for most of the ride in to work this morning. I shifted the tcase out of 4WD after leaving the sub this morning. I was in the parking lot at work before it happend agian. and this time it was only slight noise. it sounds more lik a spring vibrating than a ratchet.

It is probably in that hub. You may be able to pull it off and apart to inspect, clean.
Good luck

This is definatly on my agenda for this weekend. I am trying to find some "how it works" information so that I can actually know what I am doing once I take that cover off. This is my first 4x4 and I am learning as I go about the specifics of 4x4 issues. I have had this truck for alomost 4 years now...

To remove the auto hubs:
First, remove the cap. Probably three torx screws.
Second, remove snapring in outer hub. It may be hard to see in there. Use some small picks, they are available at local auto parts, kind of like dental tools.
Third, pull the hub assembly out.
Good luck and let me know if you need any more info.
