I have a 2006 F150 Screw Xlt 4x4. I was wondering if it is true that if you attempt to start the trucks with a key that is not computer chip programed to the truck that it must be towed to dealer. I know it would not start but can you then use the programed key to start or is the truck disabled? I am thinking of installing or having installed a remote starter and want to completely understand what can go wrong if it is not bypassed correctly.
Not sure about the "06" but the earlier years when using a non PATS key the truck would start and then die in about 2 or 3 seconds. Then using a PATS key after it would start and run normally.
I used to install things like that (my black 1998 f150 has it installed). I know for the older trucks there was a relay that you could buy the would bypass having to have the chip in the ignition. The other work-around is actually removing the plastics from your steering column and taping a spare key somewhere around there, that way the chip was still there and the truck would not have any problems.
I have a 2004 4.6L, I made a copy of the key to my truck a while ago. It doesn't have the chip in it, just the basic wal-mart copy.
If I try to start the truck with it, the starter won't even engage. The red light flashes, everything else works, but the starter woln't start.
However, if I put my factory key in it, it starts up no problem.
