Replacing ps pump

Well, I went to start the truck and it started then died. Never done that. Tried again and it started, but i backed out to see a nice black puddle. Pulled back in and looked around. Seems as if the ps pump finally died on me. Fluid is black so it must not have been changed at all.... Anything in particular to look out for when changing the unit? The service manual indicates that i need a teflon seal installer. I presume napa won't have one. Also, will the generic steering pulley installer and removers work? One last question; what is the quality of the napa vs. motorcraft in terms of ps pump longevity and durability...Don't want this one taking a dump in the near future... Thanks in advance!

I had the shop put mine on for $100. It must not have been too hard. If you get the NAPA don't mess around with the one that comes w/o the resivoir. I think it was only about $10 to get the one that had it. IMHO it was not worth the PITA to change it.

Pump

Try to get as much of the old fluid out of the system before installing the new pump - unhook the line on the bottom of the PS fluid cooler. I pushed most of the fluid out of the system w/ a little low pressure air. I collected mine and dumped it through some white cloth to see if there were any metal bits suspended in the fluid. Hate to see someone lose a new pump just because the old one tore itself up.

Any ideas on why mine leaks? Common leaks?

Pump

Seen some troubles w/ the return line breaking off or, coming loose. (the one that has the short flexible rubber hose pc btw the line & pump) Also watch the hose coming from the pump that has a tendency to rub on the steering shaft - mine's wrapped in some protective nylon spiral sleeving. (Avail at Lowe's, Home Depot etc)

That's about it as far as I've seen. Most of the time the pumps just go.

Well, all said and done cost $390. Needed a new ps pump (AC DELCO not sure of their reliability), a full flush and high pressure line. It works great now and steers when stopped much better but sometimes it doesn't want to steer when stop... Maybe needs time to break in?? Near the end of the limit turning left it stiffens up a bit, but that may be because of my larger tires... Price seemed high, but its fixed and they were the only ones who could get it done today. I had too many things going on... thanks for the help though!

You probably still have some entrained air in the system. Each night for a week, turn the steering wheel to full lock either left or right side, let go of the steering wheel so it does not lock, and then leave it like that for the night. It helps get some more air out of the system.
