Coil over plug unit's that is. Just had my second one go. Little buggers are expensive. Borowed my buddy's code reader overwise would have had to pay a shop to scan it!!!
COPs can be had for about $28.00 each nowadays and that's complete with boots. Still a good chunk of money, but they rarely go out all-at-once.
Noboby can really say when they'll go for sure. Some don't last but for 80K, then others may hang on until 200K. I think alot of it has to do with moisture and trash getting into the plug cavity causing the boot to rot faster, then affecting the COP.
Just get one new COP and find out which cylinder is misfiring by replacing them one at a time until you find it.
Or you could pay the dealer to pull a diagnostic on your engine. Saves time, but could cost from $50.00 to $125.00.
"Round Robin" - which is replace the COPs with one new one, one at a time until you find the bad one.
Thing is, a bad COP won't throw a code unless it's a dead miss and has registered for a certain amount of time (engine running time).
Also a COP can spike high and low and never fail completely, making the business of finding the bad one pretty tedious.
That's why, if you have good PR at a dealership, it's easier to get them to pull a diag on it. With me it just costs about $50.00 each time. I have heard other say it cost them $125.00. But the diag can pinpoint the bad COP or COPs with just one check. The tech may need to take it for a road test, but they'll find it.
Where are you finding those so cheap at? Everywhere I've looked has them at or around $50. The last time I was at the dealership to find a bad cop, they gave me a printout on the receipt of the other 9 coils and 5 of them looked like they were on the verge of death... I imagine replacing all of them would give me (and the truck) a nice fresh start when I change the plugs.
I'll have to go back and look for that thread, Matt, but almost all of them were online stores. There were a few on Ebay.
There's about 20 different manufacturers with the same part and about that many with similar parts. I guess the automotive parts industry found out real quick how much in demand they were and started gathering them up.
bought 10 cops on ebay for 140 bucks delivered. they come with a 2 year warranty. motorcraft plugs from autozone 3.50 each. #10 started misfire at 85k.
