its in the 46 1/2 ton I aquired ,a short time ago. it does not have the tapperd axle tubes.modern shocks added but with some imagination I can see how the originals would have been added , one full turn of a wheel will spinn the yoke appx 2.3 times ,that cant be,can it ?no tags to go by only a presumed casting date of 44 thanx in advance for any help.
thanx for the reply . Im thinking the late 60s early 70s tang, as the auto floor shifter is somewhat installed. how do I get a photo out there to see ? I have digital pics? what about the revs ? I did the wel spin drill a dozen times, and still get 2.3 revs on the yoke per wheel rev. also the rear has 1/2 ton 5 lug pattern.
The easiest swaps into a '46 would be 1/2 ton rears up to '72. Since your tubes are not tapered if it is a 1/2 ton it would likely be '48 or newer. I think they had 2 basic style between '48 and '72. The early ones (I think to '57) were the Dana style where there is a differential cover on the back side.
hey great info. thanx soul46. yes to the rear access and no other obviouse mods. I did after chisling off a few more barnicls find a castin # of what looks like "319".Again thanx ,Ihad been looking specificly for a 46 1/2 ton for probably 10 plus years,"One that I could afford."
3mike6.thanx .I did the two revs both wheels free. and I got 3.8 /3.9 revs at two wheel turns. it is non possi as I can block one wheel and spinn the other? other input that I have recieved and Greatly appriceate thanx to you guys I am refining my plans to get this on the road... by the time there is fuel left to burn.I have not figured out how to do pics on this site . but for anyone who is into the the ugliest thing ford built ,Id like to share photoes via email.gotta love em.thanx ,3mike6
I got one of those rears with my 1st '46 also. In the early '60s the guy I bought it from had converted the truck into a hunting camper. He extended the frame and moved the front of the spring to the rear spring perch. He said that he had setup a double axle of some sort using this newer rear as the drive. He had the frame pretty much cleaned up when I got to see it, but gave me all the parts that he had for that truck. I didn't realize that the rear was "wrong" until I tried to bolt it onto the springs -- the spring pads were welded in the wrong spot. So after a little investigation here I realized that it was likely late '40s.
Since the project has been going slow, I have been buying parts whenever I find them. I now have an ~'72 and a '57 9" 1/2 ton rear. And just recently picked up an original banjo really cheap.
