I had this problem too I replaces the starter ,solenoid, key tumbler It then got stuck on again and fried the solenoid again. After replacing the solenoid I also did the igntion tumbler again and all is well so far its been 4 months no problems. I say faulty solenoid try replacing it again and see what happens. Did you do it exactly correct when you replaced the tumbler ?

When you replaced the ignition cylinder and keys, did you happen to look at the brass gear, bearing and retainer below it?

The gear strips, and when that happens, turning the key does nothing, because the gear can't engage the actuator. Engine runs on...and on....and on....

Yeah the first time doing it I messed up the brass thing it was a tick or two in the wrong direction thats why I think it got stuck on again. I went to the gas station one day and sure enough it got stuck on again so I reinstalled it and changed the solenoid again and all is well. The brass ring its crucial it goes back into the same position as when taken out.

after charging the battery, yeah, one of the most common mistakes when diagnosing a starting issue is not have a full (overnight) charge on the battery before starting, with low power, the contact points in the solenoid will actually burn together, kinda like a spot weld.

The key turns on the ignition and the starter engages but then the starter keeps running even after nthe engine catches, so I turned the key off and the starter is still running. Did it again this morning when I tried to start it, so I pulled a battery cable to stop it. The actuating rod between the key and start switch is moving back and forth properly. Any more suggestions?

When it does it again, run out and pull the small wire off the solenoid (#5 in the picture above). If it keeps cranking with wire #5 off, then the solenoid is welding itself together inside. This has been all too common lately, and the fix is to buy another solenoid of a different brand. They are making some crappy solenoids lately.

Attention everyone!!!!

Do not use the old style solenoid that was OE on 85 and earlier. Use the new style on 86 and later (for fender mount). The old style was strictly meant for leaded gas. If you have an older style and are running unleaded gas you must change over to the new style. The older style will not tell the starter to shut off as there is a small electrical field which maintains current to the brain. This is why so many of you are burning up solenoids. If you add an leaded alternative to your gas for older engines then the change is not necessary. The newer ones discharge the electrical field so as not to back feed to the brain. I installed it and NO problems!!!!!! Thank you Advance Auto.
