Hey there Gtex, you were correct, the "kit" did consist of the pads and clips to stiffen the reaer springs. Ford has a TSB on that particular item. Unfortunately, it didn't sole the klunk...or should I say double klunk. It seem that periodically, my '97 4X4 klunks twice, in succession. Of course, the dealer can't feel it or hear it. All the spring kit did was stiffen the ride and deplete my checking account $170 not to mention they kept the truck 4 days, but I said I wasn't going to mention that.
I can approximate the klunk by shifting from forward to reverse while applying the brake. This makes me wonder if the transfer case is generating the noise. I have checked the u-joints and they appear to be normal, but the klunk does feel like a bad u-joint. When I shift to reverse, I can feel/hear the transmission shift, twist the shaft, then I get this klunk like a u-joint is bad. This doe not happen when I shift back to forward. If I find the problem I will repost.....If anyone finds the solution please respond.
I finally gave up and took my truck in. I could feel the linings pop when applying the brakes in reverse and the front would pop after I put it in drive and hit the brakes. A simple brake adjustment eliminated the noise. The rear brakes now drag a little and the emergency brake hardly needs to be depressed but at least there is no noise at all. This may not be your problem but....
