I need to drive my 56 in a few days , but I have no hood hinges. The factory latch is in place. I intended to convert to a forward tilt design eventually but have not started on it yet. I don't really want to drive it without a hood as rain & snow is in the forecast. My question is do I need to put a strap across the back of the hood to keep it from lifting in the wind . I will be driving 45-50 mph maximum . Thanks
I would diffinately strap it down. There are two possible, if not more, ways for the hood to fly off. One, the air coming through the engine compartment would at least make the hood raise a little making it jump up and down as you're driving down the road. Second, and must dangerous event is a sudden stop and the hood will fly off. At the very least I would bungee cord it down or use a nylon rachetting strap, something, I wouldn't just drive down the street without lashing it down some how.
thomc, Personally I"d rather drive with no hood than with a loose one, around the block is one thing,40-50mph around the beltway ,that"s something entirly different,,...that said, save your self some grief, accidents just find a way to happen..."DIRE EMERGENCY???" ...wife about to have ababy?? 10-15mph??? Please use your best judgement..Good Luck!!
Hood???? who needs a hood. It has been said that real hotrods don't need hoods. LOL, I am putting one on next month but ONLY because RJ told me to. I did cruise about 1K miles and 30 cars shows hoodless and 1 in a major storm. Was that a 'Need" or a want. I don't think there is a safe way to drive without the hood being bolted on all the way. Strap or not. But, have fun either way.
Jon, That looks pretty cool ..you might start a new fad,my hood looks like something out of a bad dream,..despite all the aggravation invested in it..Hmm.
I agree Jon. your truck does look pretty damn sharp! like it is. To get your aerodynamics right, to improve your speed and mileage, your probably going to have to add that hood.
thomc, If it can come off, it will!

god no not the no hood thing again ! when i was younger it was the in thing to paint yer motor up , buy a bunch of chrome and play like barney ba by idling it way down so it sounded like it had a cam . even had one kid paint a fire extinguisher blue , put a nos systems sticker on it , run a braided line to a vacuum port on his 2bbl and tell everyone he had nitrous !!!!LOL go hoodless if ya cant put hinges on it and carry a tarp for when it's parked . i'd hate too see your truck sustain serious damage or someone else .
Chris and Wayne, Thanks guys. I do have a perfect stock hood in guide coat but I will be using a Fairlane hood since I can not lift the tin anymore. Plus, that MPG thing...you are very right, I get about 12 per on a good day. Some of the fault is my lead foot and stroked vette. I just thought it would be cool to show off the engine bay the first year out as it is the focal point of the truck. There is a lot of bling and detail. I do agree with RJ though, the 53-56 does need the hood to look right. I'll do the flip from HotRods real soon.
I would definitely take it off I was only driving 3 miles really slow with my hood locked in with the front only; the wind got under it and it came off, I slam the brakes which busted a brake cylinder and the rest is history I rolled right over the hood, that was about 15+ year ago damn that was a perfect hood..
