Question Engine or radiator flush?

Hi everyone,

The other day I used a radiator coolant tester and when I pulled it out the rubber hose had a small amout of brown slime on it. The color of the coolant looked normal, greenish milky color. I did some checking on the internet about radiator and engine flushing and a couple sites stated to avoid the engine block flush since this can cause engine block problems from crud in the block can be forced through one-way valves and get lodged in other passages. The block is a rebuilt short-block, so not sure if it was a little dirty to begin with. Is this small amout of brown slime normal to find in the radiator or do I need to flush it and get the block flushed?

Thanks for the help.

I've always just done the radiator/engine flush thingy. Never had a problem. I always use a shop to do a power flush though...don't have to worry about used antifreeze disposal.

I've heard the same thing about the engine block flush. I don't know for sure if it is really something to worry about, but I've never had to take my chances on one. I don't think the brown slime is all that unusual either. I had a little 4 cylinder Chevy that built up a bunch of it, and a radiator flush seemed to do the trick.
Your coolant shouldn't look too milky though, as that is a sign of oil mixing with it. You probably already know that, I'm just extra talkative this morning.
