I personally would torn O/D off. This is why, if you cover uneven terrain the engin sill be straining harder and cause more shifting to take place which generates more heat. Excess heat, taken to the extreme, breaks down the fluid faster, this causes tranny damage. With o/d off the tranny doesn't need to "kick down" to carry the load up an incline as often. I have even seen the mileage while towing go up because it didn't have to hunt for the correct gear so much. When it is shifting you aren't pulling anything, you are coasting. Whether that is downhill or uphill.
Over level ground at sustained speeds, start out without o/d, then turn it on. If the transmission is shifting too often, switch it off again.

Yep, I talked to the dealer and they told me if it shifted to often to turn it off....course every time I tow (16 footer usually with a car or truck on it) it bugs the hell out of me and I turn it off anyway....trading off piece of mind for what the dealer said. Whit
