steering slipping

the steering on my 79 f150 4x4 is scaring me a bit, wondering if you could help . . when i turn it feels like something slips and i have to turn it another 1/2 turn or so before it grabs and turns. its just not catching or something. just replaced the column today and didnt help, and theres some movement in the shaft down to the gearbox. sound like gearbox troubles or shaft? any help is appreciated

If something is actually slipping then its most likely in the box. The couplers on the shaft could be slipping on the splines connecting it to the column or the box but if the connections were loose it doesnt seem likely that it would catch and start working. Sloppy steering could be from the shaft, steering box or drag link being worn or any combination of those. Also make sure the column bearings are in good shape

Rag Joint/Coupler in good shape? At times they can tear and make the steering really fun. Otherwise the whole deal with full suspension/steering check, with an extra close look at the gear box itself.

well i figured out the source, but its kind of strange to me . . ive got about a 3 inch lift, bought the truck already lifted, with a block under each front leaf set(wasnt sure if this was ok), and the front driver block is shifting back and forth with turns. i loosened the ubolts off and adjusted and retightened and the steering is good again, but the block is still moving a bit. seems dangerous to me? a piece of the passenger block is actually broken off on the back side also. should i use a different system here or just put new blocks on?

Blocks in the front is not good. This sounds like a dangerous situation. Might let Nashville Spring Service take a look at it and give you an estimate if you don't won't to do the work yourself. You need to replace with a good set of 3" or so lift springs.
