The starter on my 77 went bad today it has a 400 motor and I dont have enough cash to get a new one. But I do have a good one from a 302.
Will it work?
Its really cold out so I thought I would ask hear befor I go swap it out in 0 degree weather.
Hey,
I hope it helps, but I spent a couple of minutes on AutoZone's website and looked up the part numbers for a 302 and a 400 starter. They are different numbers. Sounds as though they won't fit.
240/300 I-6 / 302 / 351W starters are the same...BUT...there are two different starters..one for a manual trans, one for an automatic.
351C (cars only) 351M/400 starters are not the same as 240/300/302/351W's.
Junkyard info: The cars used 351C's = 1970/74 / 351M's 1975/79 / 400's 1971/79. 8 valve cover bolts per valve cover. (the 302 and 351W's have 6 bolts per cover)
Trucks used 351M/400's 1977/82.
The 351C/351M/400 starter is the same for manual or auto trans.
Also, the 460 starter is the same as the 351C/351M/400 starter. The 460 starter in the 80s has a lot more torque than the 400 starter and is good if you are building a high compression C or M block motor.
Mine went awhile ago too. I took it apart, emery clothed all the contact surfaces and re-assembled it....works as good as new. This might be a cheaper option for you.

I seen blue smoke come out of it, I think its toast
Im not tryin to jack this thread, but i need to get my 86, wich has a 300 I-6 carb manual. would i be able to use my 460's starter (460 is a 1979)? i did some compairing the cone on the end seems a little longer. but i went under and it could seem to fit. just thought id ask before i would mess around with it. thanks! (they want $40 at the junk yard for a starter.... and a new one costs 50 at the local store.)
the nose piece is the only difference in 302 and 400 starter
by changing the bolts the 302 starter will start the 400 just fine, only thing I noticed with auto I got a real light chirp in reverse under hard pull
