O.k. I have a 1990 F-150 XLT 4x4 ext cab, it doesn't throw much heat, if I leave it idle in the driveway it throws enough heat to notice a temp difference when you hop in but once you are driving it cools down. I have replaced the thermostat, I checked the coolant and it's good. This truck is listed as having the "super cooling" package. could this be the cause? Should I put in a single core rad?
what did you put for a t stat? could try a hotter stat. could also experiment puting cardboard in front of radiator, if it overheats put less cardboard, with diesels we have to do that esp in cold weather
my 96 does the same thing but the temp gauge goes up about 1/4 the way into normal so i checked the hoses and they nice and toasty warm.seems as if the temp control on the heater conrol panel isnt working rite,if i remember rite these are vacume operated and real fun to change
-40 ? screw that, go in the house and stay there till it warms up, outside, my truck won't even turn over in -40 so your doin better than me. no really if i come up with somethin i'll let you know. maybe a 210 degree stat or do what you thought and put a smaller radiator in
unhook the hoses put a garden hose up to it and try to flush it out or backflush it.....it's nothing to change them out drop the glovebox open the black box and bam she's there...really simple......Luck
Ive had good luck with Preston Flush, but -40 is way too cold to be messing with that. Unless you have a heated garage. Just remember if the coolant system hasnt been taken care of, flushes and such and cause leaks.

The size of the radiator affects the ability to cool, but not the ability to heat.
For all practical purposes only the thermostat affects the ability to heat up, by regulating how much coolant is circulated through the radiator.
