well, it wont start ? as wont crank? or cranks over and no fire?
if you looking for a GPR its the second relay closer to the intake Y in the middle of the engine bay , over the passenger valve cover, jump the 2 big posts for minute ot 2 , and if thats your problem you should fire right up....
well its AIH , air intake heater Jeff,
and you dont have tu turn the key, one side has constant 12V from the battery. so you can jump it without the key being turn on. just wanted to clear it up....
I had the key on, held the jump for 2 mins and it almost started , It blew alot of white smoke.I changed the gpr last year but I was not sure which one it was today. Last month I changed the fuel bowl heater element and I checked the # 30 fuse to it just now ,OK . Does it sound like the GPR still? I also put a test light on the gprs small wires and it lit up. The tach moves very little ,but it moves,I had Ford change the CPS last month also. I appreciate all your responces. LOU
What did you jump the gpr with? IMO about 30 seconds a clip should be more then enough to get it to run. Maybe try two cycles. Jump the gpr, then try to start it. The fact you said you jumped it for two minutes, might have drained the batteries enough that it cant start. Try charging them up real good, then jump for about 30 seconds, and start. repeat if necesary. My truck works really well, and at less then 10F I can start the truck with 15 seconds of "wait to start" (key on engine off)
If you have someone else with a two batteried truck, and two sets of jumper cables that would be helpfull. From what Ive noticed, if you are at the point it wont start, it takes more then one set of cables and batteries to start these pigs haha. Dont ask me how I know
and for sure your weak batts will cause crank and no start, its time for new ones, this trucks need lots of juice to start - especially in very cold wether,
get Motorcrafts or bats of your choice but no less than 850CCA, chenge both of them for sure
Well it depends how low your batts are. But if you start the caravan, and let it run for 15 mins while hooked to your truck, it may be a good start. Also, if you could run the rpms up on the van, that way it charges more. Most alts do not make much current at idle. So run the rpms up to 1500-2000 on the van, and let it sit for 15 mins, you would have a shot at it. Keep the van hooked when you try to start it.
While you're trying to charge your batteries, take a multi meter and check for voltage on the 2 large posts of the GPR with the key off. One should read hot (whatever voltage your weak batteries are putting out) and the other should be dead. Have someone else turn the key on while you check voltage on the dead post. A good GPR should show volts on the other post between 1-120 seconds if the engine is cold.
Edit: If the GPR is bad, swap it for the relay next to it (AIH) for now until you get a replacement.
I replaced the GPR from pepboys and it started right up when I was loosening the nuts on the old relay the threaded teminal broke off the housing telling me it needed changing anyway. Thats it though, Im looking for a newer truck, Ford of course, but an F350 with a higher GVWR for my camper . Ive had so many problems with this truck(LEMON) its time for a newer one. Thank You for all your help, as always this forum came through.
