I have a 2000 PSD 7.3 Xcurion with following mods. 9.5 inch lift, stock exhaust muffler delete, 6637 filter, TS performace 6 way chip running 100 HP, and 33x14.50 Super swamper SSR Tires. Pulling a haulmark Vnose four place at 5100 punds yesterday speeds 65-68 mph (tried to stay under 2000 rpm) temps were 6deg to 0deg. I would see about 8-15 for boost and EGT was 900-1100. I got 8.3 MPG over 310 miles. Good or bad. I've pulled same trailer with 1800 more punds and got 9.4 differences were slightly warmer 18-25 deg, and running 35x12.50 AT tires (much lighter then Swammpers but Slightly taller). Any thing help out here for mileage or is it just the tires and lift killing me? I have always seen about 1 mile per gallon less going to wider heavier Swampers even when not pulling , but they look way cooler. I was going to do Ford severe duty intake and 4" exhaust. I just dont see the exhaust helpingme much because EGT looks good and that is in the driverside manifold also.
With all the mods, lifts, big tires that you have on the truck, I think about the only way you are going to get an accurate figure of actual miles traveled is to use a GPS.
Either that or verify exactly what your speedo/odo is reading and convert from there.
I get about 8-9.5 pulling my 14k 5th wheel depending on how big of a hurry I am in and headwinds, etc.
70=8
65=9.5 in most cases.
I just drove cross country and averaged about 8.5. With the worst being 6.7, and the best being around 10. I was in a hurry and towing alot more weight than you though. Like Dan said check to see how far your speedo is off with a gps and do your mileage that way. You will definately get more accurate results. I dont know but maybe when the temp gets colder they place more antigel in the fuel. Plus you probly let it warm up a little longer before starting off.
Yes in the winter the fuel is blended and the milage is usually lower .
I realize that but when say the temps are 15 - 40, do they use so much and 0 - 15 do they add more? Another words the colder it gets do they add more or is it the same? I was someplace and it seems like thats what I heard but I am not quite sure.
Thanks for input guys. ya the numbers are all based on GPS. This truck has been with me a while and had numerous lifts and tires. I don't pull in the summer because I have motorhome and a 93 bronco behind that for the sand dunes. The excursion is for family trips and pulling snowmobiles. The X will pull anything and never comes out of overdrive I wouldn't trade for anything. The reliablity and fact that I dont have to worry about being left on side of raod when 0 degrees out is priceless. If I pulled in summer I could see the 4 inch exhaust, and I gather that for my situation not much gain with exhaust for the money then correct?
I pull a gooseneck 4 place horsetrailer with a 12 foot short wall full living quarters and since I changed the exhaust and the air intake have been getting 12.5 mpg towing. Recent trip over 300 miles not towing and running 55-60 mph I got a little over 22mpg on winter fuel. I have the six speed and that probably helps and my truck is mostly stock except for the exhaust, air intake and running boards.
Between 10mpg and 11mpg towing my 9k 5er between 65 and 70mph. FWIW, it was in the 9mpg before I fixed my boost leaks and got Jody's 40hp tow tune.
Next trip I'm really going to try and do less than 60mph and see what mileage I get, but usually I get a few miles down the road and get irritated about being a moving chicane and get with the big rigs and hammer down...

I don't understand the difference between summer and winter for exhaust upgrades? My truck was much more responsive immediately after I added the 4 inch turbo back exhaust. More air in = more air out = a happier motor anytime of the year I get around 10-12 mpg when towing...

I agree with you on the exhaust but he is running a stock exhaust with chip and his EGT's will be higher when it's summer time and 100 * outside.
I agree with you Dave......but he was asking if the exhaust would be worth it......I think anybody, whether you tow or not, drive empty in summer or winter could benefit from bigger exhaust
