Well considering I've found a pretty good deal on a mountaineer I'm considering going for it but of course like most of them its an AWD, I don't care for it to much but this thing has the leather the heated seats climate control everything that was available its like the Limited version of the Mountaineer. But curious as to what you folks that have an AWD think of them and what your average gas mileage is with one. I like to go off into trails and stuff so keep that in mind, this vehicle has 174k on it thats one downfall of it. So whatch ya'll think those of you that have the AWD V8?
My 05 PSD CC 4WD gets better mileage than my wife's 99 Limited. She likes the car and the only problems we had were bad spark plug wires at 55K miles and a hole in the bypass hose at 90K, it has 93k on it now. I think it gets 17-18mpg on the highway and about 15 combined. Never been off road but does good in the snow.
Oh and I ment to say this Mounty is like the Limited version of the Explorer. But I wasn't thinking it has the message center so that should say the mpg's but can't always depend on that still nice to know how others feel about their awd systems. thanks for your reply
I have an 01 EB with the AWD. 15mpg around town and 18 on the highway with a tail wind. The AWD is fantastic in any condition you will encounter on the road but lacks a low range for any serious off road stuff.
We have 2 in our family. An 07 and an 03. Both V8 AWD. The AWD is great in the snow, gravel roads, light mud etc. The 07 gets a bit better mileage than the 03. Neither are what you would consider economy rides but aren't all that horrible either. Around 16 highway, 12-14 all city. Acceptable for the quality of the vehicle.
I was just making sure because I thought they got close to the same gas mileage as the 4.0, thats all I've had so far. both explorers we got are 4.0's with regular 4X4
I have an 02 Mtnr with AWD with the 4.0. It gets a consistent 17.5 lifetime average, and I keep ALL my gasoline records. It will get 19 highway at 70-75 and aroung 16.5 local. We like it better than any vehicle we have owned, and that's a bunch of Fords. Prior to it, we had a 98 Expl with 5.0 and AWD. It got around 16 highway and 14 local. Here in Florida, and in Texas where we were, the AWD is hard to find, so we had to look hard to find a good used one when we bought it. Now we don't want anything else but AWD for regular driving.
I'm still debating on it, I don't like that I won't have 4low. But like that it has the message center/heated leather and all that. So thats still in debation I mean I know I can switch out the t-case for a 4wheel t-case but don't know if I want to go through with all that stuff lol.
as others have asked... what year are you talking about. I had (still have, waiting for it to be towed away) a 97 Mountaineer with the 5.0 and AWD. It never dissapointed me... I bought it with 172k miles for very little money and it did not cost me too much money until it died 40k miles later (when I got it the tranny was shifting funny, but I opted to just run it until it died). I pulled a few somewhat heavy trailers for over 1k mile trips with it, did a little gravel road driving, and did enough snow driving. The AWD system was great and never left me hesitating for traction. If I could get another one with similar miles in the same shape as the last one I would jump right on it!
It was a 99. But that idea has gone out the winder I went to give the guy money on it and he said he had sold it! I was ticked off, hell that mounty sat there for months then when I have the money to get it, it sells! So I've bought another 2nd gen explorer for now.
