I have removed the diff pinion shaft lock pin. The diff pinion shaft should come out next so that I can remove the c-locks on the axle shafts. The pinion shaft will not move enough to slide in the axle shafts to remove the c-locks. The pinion shaft is fairly worn. Is it OK to tap the pinion shaft out with a hammer? I'm new to this...
yes you can hit it
I would use a punch to do this
keeps the hammer further from things you want to hit
when you pulled the lock pin did all of it come out
the smooth end of the lock pin have been known to break off
and stay inside making it immpossible to move the shaft
until it is removed
The pinion locking pin is 2" total length. If it didn't break off, tap the shaft inward a couple of inches. Then rotate the carrier 180 degrees. Use something like pliers to grab the shaft and it should pull out. Don't tap the pin in to far because it will hit the case and you won't beable to rotate the carrier.
Make sure you install a new bolt. Ford Part #D8BZ-4241-B
It comes pre-coated with thread locker.
The entire pinion locking pin came out. It wasn't even finger tight, no thread locker, no nothing. The pinion pin will move about an inch before it binds in the gear. Do I want to drive the end that the locking pin came from?
